@WSU_WSoccer Earns Exciting Overtime Victory Over IUPUI Saturday

The Wright State women's soccer team was back in action Saturday night as they welcomed the Jaguars of IUPUI to Alumni Field for an evening contest. In a gritty, hard-fought match, the Raiders edged out the Jags in exciting fashion in overtime 1-0.  WSU is now 5-6-2 and 4-1-1.

First Half
The Raiders looked to apply the pressure early and often to start the match, as they fired numerous shots towards the Jags net in the early going. Jags goalkeeper Sophia Lipka was forced to make four saves in the first frame, but she was equal to the task in the early going for IUPUI. Maddie Jewell made three saves of her own in the first frame, and the two teams entered the locker room scoreless after 45 minutes of play.

Second Half
The second half was decidedly more physical than the first, with challenges from both sides being called as fouls relatively frequently. The Raiders continued to control the overall shots lead, doubling the amount of IUPUI shots at 18-9. Wright State had a few quality opportunities late in the second half, including Destiny Johnson shooting at an empty net under pressure in the 88th minute, but the shot rolled just wide of the cage. Aaliyah Patten drove down the wing shortly before Johnson's chance and got a great shot on net but was denied by the Jaguars keeper Lipka. For the fifth time this season, 90 minutes would not be enough to decide Saturday evening's match.

Overtime
On a chilly fall night at Alumni Field, the fans did not have to wait long for the game deciding moment in overtime. In the 92nd minute, the Raiders were awarded a corner kick off of a deflected ball. Patten went to the corner flag to swing the ball into the box, delivered a beautiful cross to Erin Graefen on the back post, and she popped the ball up to the head of Mattie Cutts inside the six yard box who made no mistake and headed the ball into the left side of the net to give the Raiders the victory.

Up Next
The Raiders will have just three days off before hitting the road to take on the Youngstown State Penguins on Wednesday, October 17. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm kick-off, and can be streamed live on ESPN 3.
