@WSU_WSoccer Drops Heart-Breaker to Close Season

The Wright State women's soccer team hosted one of the two Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal matches on Monday as the Detroit Mercy Titans came to Alumni Field for a rematch of the final match of the regular season, where the Titans beat the Raiders 1-0 in overtime.

First Half
The battle of the four and five seeds in the Horizon League quarterfinal did not get off to an exciting start, as both teams were content to play for possession in the first frame. The best opportunity for either team in the first half came from Jordyne Helinski, as she took a pass inside the 18 yard box and narrowly missed the far post with a shot. The Raiders took a 3-2 shot advantage into the locker room, but the match remained scoreless at the half.

Second Half
The Titans came out in the second half on the front foot offensively, and they quickly overtook the Raiders on the shot chart. In the 69th minute, a dangerous free kick was played into the Raiders defensive box, and Kelly Doyle made no mistake with the header, slotting it past Maddie Jewell to put the Titans on top 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Julie Ann Piechocki took a bending shot from outside the 18 yard box and put it into the back of the net to give Detroit Mercy the two goal advantage. With the season on the line, the Raiders attempted to mount an attack after surrendering a pair of goals, but simply ran out of time in the match, and ended the season with a 2-0 defeat. The Titans will move on to Milwaukee to face the #2 seed Cleveland State Vikings.
