Wright State head volleyball coach Allie Matters will welcome three new student-athletes to the 2019 team: Megan Alders of Sagamore Hills, OH, Callie Martin of Louisville, KY and Laurissa Poling of Sidney, OH.
Alders, a 5-10 outside hitter at Nordonia High School, was first-team All-League last two years and All District in 2018 while being Offensive MVP and Team MVP in 2016 and 2017. She holds the school kill records for career (914), season (320) and match (32). Her brother, Alex, is a junior for the WSU baseball team.
"Megan Alders is a spit-fire competitor," Mater said. Â Her passion for the game stood out to me immediately, and I knew she would be a great fit. Â She's intense, competitive, and hard working. She will add depth and ball control to our pin position. Â Megan finished a successful HS career and broke the all-time career kill record as a senior. Â I am really looking forward to watching her compete for her club team this spring. Â Megan is going to have a great career here as a student-athlete at Wright State!"
Martin, a 6-1 a right side hitter at Assumption High School, was named honorable-mention KSHAA All State and Under Armor All American while being selected to the Region 7 All-Tournament Team and MVP of the National Junior Classic and State Tournament. She also helped lead the KIVA 17 Red Club Team to the high finishes at the JVA Rock-n-Roll Rumble, JVA World Challenge and the National Junior Classic Tournament.
"I am so excited to welcome Callie Martin to the Wright State Volleyball program," Matters said. Â She has been competing at a very high level and will bring a wealth of experience to our court. Â From earning the MVP award at the Kentucky State Championships playing for the #1 ranked HS in the country, to AAU All-American honors on her nationally ranked club team, she has done it all. Â Her work ethic and competiveness fits the mold for the future of this program. I am looking forward to watching her grow as a student-athlete!"
Poling, a 6-1 middle hitter at Russia High School, was first-team All-District the last two years and second-team All-State last season as she set school records with 298 season blocks and 27 kills in a match. As a team, Russia advanced to the regionals in 2017 and 2018. She also played for the Bullets Club team that captured Buckeye Tournament title.
"Laurissa Poling is a talented multi-sport athlete who will add depth to our middle hitter position. She is physical and versatile. Laurissa is a local recruit with family ties to Wright State. She has had a great high school career and has the honors to prove it. I am excited to work with Laurissa and am looking forward to the impact she will have on our program!"
The Raiders had a banner year under first-year head coach Allie Matters as they also posted the first .500 or better season since 2003 at 15-14, the most league wins since 2008 with seven and placed three players on the all-league teams for the first time since 2001.
