The Green Bay Phoenix bested the Wright State Raiders in game one by a score of 5-1. Wright State then returned the favor in game two with an 11-8 victory to claim their first Horizon League victory of the season. The two teams will face off tomorrow in the rubber match.
Game 1
Kayla Schwebke kept the Raiders quiet in the opening game, tossing a complete game and allowed just one run. Wright State connected for seven hits but left five stranded.
Meredith Keel and
Lauren Deitrick each contributed a pair of hits in a 2 for 3 performance. Both of Deitrick's base hits were good for doubles and the junior also scored the lone Raider run.
Olivia Otani made her 16th start in the circle but surrendered three runs and was credited with the loss.
Game 2
1st Inning
After experiencing frustration at the plate in recent games, Wright State poured in the runs in game two, equaling their season high with 11. The Raiders got the offense rolling in the first, where
Meredith Keel reached on a fielder's choice and
Brianna Hutchinson blasted a home run to right field. After the Phoenix put a run on the board in the bottom half, Wright State posted a four-run third which proved to be the difference in the game.
3rd Inning
The Raiders did all of their work with two outs in the inning after
Rebekah Lenos and
Meredith Keel sent grounders to shortstop and second base, respectively. Hutchinson,
Madison Whitaker, and
Madison Nunez loaded the bases, and
Raidyn Johnson added two runs with a single. A couple of defensive mishaps allowed Nunez and Johnson to score and the Raiders took a 6-1 lead.
4th Inning
Wright State answered a two-run homer by Green Bay in the bottom of the third with two more runs in the fourth.
Rebekah Lenos smacked an RBI double into left, advanced to third, and scored on a
Madison Nunez sac fly.
5th Inning
Wright State concluded the scoring with three more runs in the fifth and threatened Green Bay with a run rule. Five total errors came back to bite the Phoenix, especially in the fifth where
Lauren Deitrick and
Raidyn Johnson scored on a two-run error.
Macy McCall took advantage of a passed ball and crossed the plate for the Raiders' eleventh run.
Green Bay avoided the run rule with three runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth.
Lexie Hilling took over in the circle in the bottom of the seventh and clinched the Wright State win while claiming her second save of the year.
