Raiders Set to Face Panthers in Quarterfinals
The Wright State women's tennis team will be heading to West Lafayette to take part in the Horizon League Tournament hosted on Purdue University's campus at the Schwartz Tennis Center.Â
After going 5-4 in the League, the Raiders earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will face the No. 4 seed Milwaukee Panthers who went 6-3 in the conference this spring. The teams are set to face off at 3:00 PM on Friday, April 26th in the league quarterfinals. Â
The Panthers took the match 4-3 from the Raiders in the teams' first meeting of the year on April 7th. In the match, Andreea Craciun and Jillian Milano won a dominating 6-0 on Court Three but the Raiders were unable to take the doubles point from the Panthers. In singles competition, the Raiders earned points from Luisa Pelayo, Madison Riley, and Jillian Milano in the narrow defeat.Â
Wright State
The Raiders (15-14, 5-4) ended the regular season with a 5-2 victory against the Detroit Mercy Titans last Saturday.Â
Wright State has carried consistent doubles play throughout the season and boast multiple pairs inside the Top 10 of the Horizon League standings. Haily Morgan and Madison Riley are 17-8 this spring and 6-3 in the conference playing at the top of the order for the Raiders. Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney sit at 13-6 this season playing at the No.2 position. Andreea Craciun and Jillian Milano round out the doubles lineup for the Raiders with a 13-5 record.Â
In singles competition, Madison Riley and Jillian Milano both hold a 19-10 record and are 7-2 against Horizon League foes. Luisa Pelayo is 12-11 this spring and holds a 4-1 conference record after winning her three most recent outings.
The Raiders advanced to the semifinals of last year's tournament, falling to UIC 4-1.
Milwaukee
The Panthers (13-9, 6-3) are coming off a 7-0 drubbing of the Green Bay Phoenix last Saturday.Â
Alex Belle (14-7, 5-3) leads the Panthers on the singles courts at No.1 position. Nicole Clarke flexes position around the singles lineup for Milwaukee but holds a 14-8 record. The Panthers boast a strong lineup in the doubles competition with their two top pairs holding a combined 19-3 record. At the top of the order, Nicole Clarke and Mayya Perova are an impressive 11-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Following them up are Alex Belle and Anna Daniel Fuentes with an 8-2 record this spring.Â
If the Raiders win, they will advance to the semifinals with the finals to be played Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for 3:00 PM.
