Wright State defeats Wagner Saturday morning
2/29/2020 12:50:00 PM | Softball
The Raiders' bats started hot, recording three runs in the top of the first inning. Rebekah Lenos was hit by a pitch followed by Emily Daniel being walked which set up Payton Baxter's three-run home run to take the lead. Wagner recorded one run in the bottom of the inning by way of a wild pitch.
Wright State started the second inning, much like the first, but this time out added seven runs. Meredith Keel's single to left field started things for the Raiders. A pair of singles from Rebekah Lenos and Emily Daniel would load the bases for Brianna Hutchinson's two-run RBI single through the right side. Freshman Grace Gressly's RBI single drove in another run. The Seahawks intentionally walked Payton Baxter which set up Madison Hartman's two-run RBI double to center field. Meredith Keel returned to the plate and singled down the right field line to drive home Baxter. Wagner added a run in the bottom of the inning.
The third inning would see both teams score two runs a piece, led by the Raiders Grace Gressly who singled to right centerfield followed by a Payton Baxter doubled to right center field sending home pinch runner Erniey Hursey. Madison Hartman's sac-fly would bring home Gressly. Back to back solo homeruns from Wagner would give them two. Lauren Deitrick's solo homerun over the left centerfield fence proved to be the only run of the fourth inning for either side.
The top of the fifth saw the Raiders add three more led by Olivia Otani's RBI single to right field. Meredith Keel and Raidyn Johnson both recorded RBI singles. Wagner looked to answer, scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning led by Bianca Worthy's RBI single, followed by another RBI single up the middle. Nora Conway's RBI single down the left field line added another run for Wagner. The Seahawks scored one final run in the bottom of the inning, but it wouldn't be enough.
Freshman Meredith Keel was the only player on either team to finish the day going 3-for-4, recording three hits and three RBIs for the Raiders. Payton Baxter, Madison Hartman, Grace Gressly, Brianna Hutchinson and Emily Daniel would each go 2-for-3 on the day.
Sophomore Olivia Otani recorded the win in the circle for Wright State, striking out three and allowing four runs off of four hits in 2.2 innings of work. Lauren Deitrick got the start in the circle for the Raiders, striking out three Seahawks, allowing four runs in off five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
