FORT WAYNE, IN – A quick start for the Wright State women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon proved not to be enough as Purdue Fort Wayne tallied the final two goals of the afternoon to hand the Raiders a 2-1 loss in Horizon League action.
Wright State (4-7-3, 2-3-2 HL) jumped out in front early when Josie Krupp seventh minute shot deflected off a Fort Wayne defender and found the bottom right corner of the net. Fort Wayne (4-6-4, 3-4 HL) answered the early goal with a score of its own in the 26th minute when Kayla Shebar's cross found Morgan Reitano to knot the match.
Shortly after the break, the host Mastodons took the lead for good, as Reitano again found the back of the net, this time seeing her shot just sneak inside the post off a feed from Rylee Vruggink.
Wright State finished the afternoon with an 18-11 overall shot advantage, but had 11 of those attempts in the first half. The Raiders' tallied 10 attempts on frame to Fort Wayne's five, but Mastodon keeper Samantha Castaneda collected nine saves for the hosts. Krupp and Kaylin Helinski each had four shots to pace the Raider attack, while Olga Massombo delivered three attempts and Lauren Borchert added two shots. Wright State keeper Jessika Seward finished with three saves in the loss.
Looking forward, three of Wright State's final four regular season contests will be at home on Alumni Field, beginning on Thursday night when the Raiders host Robert Morris in a 7 p.m. matchup. Thursday's match is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.
