Final second goal downs Women's Soccer Thursday night

DAYTON – The Wright State women's soccer team looked destined to play extra time on Thursday night before visiting Detroit Mercy found the back of the net with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation to hand the Raiders a 2-1 defeat.

Wright State (4-6-3, 2-2-2 HL) tied the match in the 56th minute on Josie Krupp's goal, only to see Erica Toupin find the bottom right corner with 17 seconds remaining in regulation off an assist from Erica Leinweber as Detroit Mercy (2-9-1, 1-3-1 HL) made its final push before overtime.

After a scoreless first half, both sides got on the scoreboard within three minutes of each other early in the second 45 minutes, first in the 53rd minute when Toupin stole a pass deep in the Raider defensive end and flicked the tally into the upper right corner of the net.

Minutes later, Wright State responded on Krupp's goal, off a cross from Maddie Mitchell, before the final Detroit Mercy push that ended with Toupin's final second score.

Detroit Mercy outshot Wright State 16-12, putting six shots on frame to the Raiders' three. Krupp and Brittney Petrosky each tallied a team-leading three shots for the Raiders, who also had two attempts from both Michelle Rings and Kaylin Helinski. Jessika Seward had four saves for Wright State in goal. Toupin and Taylor Stanley each had four shots for Detroit Mercy, while keeper Jazmine Scott had a pair of saves.

Wright State has a quick turnaround, returning to action on the road Sunday afternoon at Purdue Fort Wayne. Sunday's match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.
