Wright State's Austin Schoonmaker has been named the final Horizon League Golfer of the Week this season, the League office announced on Thursday afternoon.
Schoonmaker finished tied for first at three-under at the Wright State Invitational, but lost the scorecard tiebreaker to Valpo's Caleb VanArragon after Monday's final round. Schoonmaker carded a one-under 70 in his opening round on Sunday before following that up with a 67 in his second round to sit at five-under after the first day of play. In windy conditions Monday, he turned in a final round 73 to finish three-under overall. Schoonmaker collected 11 birdies over the 54 holes, helping pace Wright State to a 13-shot win and the team title.
Schoonmaker helped lead Wright State to its second team tournament title of the season at the Wright State Invitational at Heatherwoode Golf Club. As a team, the Raiders led the field with 166 total pars over the 54 holes, while their 40 birdies also led all teams.
Wright State and Schoonmaker are getting set for the Horizon League Championship, which will be played this weekend, April 25-27, in West Lafayette, Indiana. Last week's Wright State Invitational was a preview of sorts for the HL title, with nine of the 10 Horizon League foes facing off at the same course for the first time this season. Following the Raiders, the next best Horizon League team finish was newcomer Purdue Fort Wayne, who finished fourth overall at 38-over.
