DAYTON — The Wright State women's soccer program closed its regular season home slate with a 3-1 loss against Oakland on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Raiders fell to 7-6-3 on the season and 4-2-3 in the Horizon League, while Oakland's record improved to 7-2-7 overall and 4-1-3 in conference play.
Elise Canter led WSU in the loss with her fourth goal of the year, while
Olivia Mace and
Ashley Vaughn notched an assist apiece.
Lauren Borchert and
Olga Massombo contributed to the attack with four combined shots.
Goalkeeper
Jessika Seward finished with three saves compared to two goals allowed over 62 minutes.
Kiera Sarka replaced Seward in the second half, allowing one goal over 28 minutes.
Oakland controlled the possession in the first half, resulting in advantages in total shots (11-4), shots on goal (2-1), and corner kicks (3-1). However, Seward and company kept the Golden Grizzlies off the scoreboard with several blocks and two saves, leading to a scoreless game at halftime.
The Raiders had a prime opportunity to score with three shots over 12 seconds at the 51-minute mark, but OU blocked each attempt to keep the conference matchup tied, 0-0.
Oakland swayed the momentum back in its favor with the game's first goal in the 53rd minute off the foot of Sophie Wilsey. The Golden Grizzlies put the game out of reach with goals in the 60th and 65th minutes, pushing their lead to 3-0.
Wright State brought its deficit down to two goals in the 68th minute, as Canter scored for the third time in her last two games off assists by Mace and Vaughn. However, the Raiders were held off the scoreboard for the remaining 22 minutes of action, sealing a 3-1 loss.
The Raiders will conclude their regular season at Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, October 26. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Highland Heights, Ky.
