Raiders fall at Dayton, 2-0

DAYTON — The Wright State women's soccer program fell to Dayton 2-0 on a slick Sunday night at Baujan Field.

Wright State dropped to 1-1 in the early season, while Dayton earned its first win to improve to 1-0-1.

WSU was limited to seven shots, including six on goal, in the shutout loss. Lauren Borchert led the team in total shots (3) and shots on goal (2). Michelle Rings, Marcella Sizer, Josie Krupp, and Elise Canter each added one shot on goal.

Goalkeeper Jessika Seward made a statement with six saves in the first half but was replaced at the 42-minute mark after being injured on an own goal. Kiera Sarka held the Flyers scoreless in goal with a career-high four saves in the remaining 47 minutes.

Both teams displayed an aggressive approach in the non-conference contest, combining for 26 fouls and seven yellow cards.

Despite an hour and a half delay to start the match between the crosstown foes, the Flyer offense came out firing with 21 shots in the first half, including seven on goal. UD's Itala Gemelli found the back of the net at the six-minute mark to put the Flyers up 1-0. An own goal with three minutes left in the opening half resulted in a 2-0 deficit for the Raiders.

Borchert rattled off a pair of efficient shots on goal in the first half, but UD goalkeeper Maddie Crosbie corralled both saves to keep WSU off the scoreboard. Sizer appeared to score her first goal of the season via a header in the 12th minute off a pass from Olivia Mace. However, the goal was taken away due to an offside call against Wright State.

The Raider defense rebounded in the second half, limiting Dayton to six shots overall and none in the final 19 minutes. Wright State's rally was cut short, as none of its three shots on goal found the back of the net.

Wright State will stay on the road for a non-conference contest at Miami (OH) on Thursday, August 25. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio.
