Volleyball sweeps Milwaukee Friday night to open weekend

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team opened the weekend with a sweep over visiting Milwaukee on Friday night inside McLin Gymnasium as the Raiders remained undefeated in Horizon League action.
Wright State (11-3, 3-0 HL) now readies for Green Bay, who also remained undefeated in League play with a sweep at NKU Friday night. The visiting Phoenix are now 14-9 overall and 5-0 in the HL heading into Saturday. Saturday's match will get underway at 4 p.m. and is slated to be streamed on ESPN+.

Friday night, the Raiders battled with Milwaukee (4-12, 3-2 HL) for the first two sets, winning by scores of 25-20 and 25-21 before closing the match with a dominant, 25-12 third set.
Sam Ott finished with a match-high 12 kills to lead the Raider attack that also saw 11 kills from Callie Martin as she finished with another double-double, adding 14 digs, while Taylor Bransfield collected 10 kills as well. Martin added three of Wright State's five service aces, while her 14 digs were tied with Jenna Story for a match high as Jenny Morey also finished in double figures with 10 digs. Lainey Stephenson passed out 39 of the Raiders' 48 assists as she now has 4,444 career assists and continues to inch closer to second-place on the all-time list (Lisa Dearden, 4,657).
SET ONE
Wright State jumped ahead early with four of the first six points before Milwaukee clawed back and the sides traded mini runs. The Raiders ran off an 8-3 run to push to 21-15 but Milwaukee scored five of the next seven to make things interesting. Wright State closed the set behind a kill from Martin and a service ace from Story.
SET TWO
The Raiders were forced to play from behind as Milwaukee used an 8-1 spurt to jump out to a 13-6 advantage. Wright State responded with a run of its own, rolling off five straight points behind a pair of kills each from Martin and Ott to pull back into the set. A 5-1 run pushed the Raiders into the lead momentarily at 19-18, and following a Milwaukee point to knot the score, Wright State gained full control of the set with four straight points and then closed the set on a pair of kills from Ott.
SET THREE
Milwaukee scored five of the first six points, but it was all Wright State from there, as the Raiders outscored the visitors 24-7 to close the set and the night. Wright State used a 10-3 run to pull back into the set and take the lead at 15-10 but put the night out of reach thanks to a string of seven straight points behind kills from Alders, Bransfield and Martin to double up Milwaukee and end the night moments later behind a surprise kill from Stephenson and a final attacking error by the visitors.
