RICHMOND, Ky. — The Wright State women's soccer program dropped a 2-1 decision to Eastern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
The Raiders fell to 3-3 on the season, while EKU improved to 2-2 overall.
Wright State totaled 16 shots in the loss, besting the Colonels in shots on goal (7-5).
Olga Massombo was WSU's top threat offensively, as she finished with four shots, including two on frame.
Marcella Sizer netted her first goal as a Raider on a penalty kick.
Lauren Borchert added three shots (two on goal).
Goalkeeper
Jessika Seward tallied three saves, allowing two goals in the process. Seward and
Kaylee Pham were the lone Raiders to play the entirety of the match.
Despite topping Eastern Kentucky in total shots (9-8) and shots on goal (3-2) in the opening half, the Raiders went into halftime trailing 1-0. EKU's Kylie Fitzgerald delivered a strike to the back of the net in the 20th minute for the period's lone goal.
WSU's best opportunity to even the match transpired at the 36-minute mark, as
Marina Ruthsatz fired a shot off the top crossbar. Additionally, Borchert had a shot sail just high of a goal in the first 45 minutes. Meanwhile, Seward put her body on the line with multiple collisions near goal to prevent the Colonels from increasing their edge.
Wright State did not waste time coming out of the halftime break, as Sizer notched the equalizer in the 50th minute on a penalty kick. However, EKU took the lead back in the 67th minute on a penalty kick of its own off the foot of Maddie Lemery.
Sizer came close to tying the match at the 79-minute mark with a shot on goal, but EKU goalkeeper Lauren Seedlock corralled the save to preserve the home squad's edge. The Colonel's defense limited WSU to no shots for the remainder of the match.
The Raiders will return to action on Thursday, September 8, at Kentucky. The non-conference finale will start at 7 p.m. and air on SEC Network Plus.
