SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit Mercy is 3-7-3 overall with a 2-2-2 mark in the Horizon League. The Titans are coming off a 1-1 draw at home against Purdue Fort Wayne last Saturday and have played to draws in three of their last four contests overall. Detroit Mercy is just 1-6 away from home this season. Â
Â
HISTORY VS. DETROIT MERCY
The Raiders lead the all-time series 19-13-2 after playing to a 2-2 draw last November in the regular season finale. Reece Allbaugh tallied a goal for the Raiders last fall with an assist from Conner Osterholt, while former Raider Joe Kouadio netted the other Wright State goal. Wright State's last win in the series was in Spring 2021, a 3-2 overtime road victory, while the last win at home for the Raiders came in October 2019 with a 3-1 victory.
Â
LAST TIME OUT…
Wright State allowed a pair of early goals last Saturday as the Raiders fell 5-0 at Oakland in wet and sloppy conditions. The Raiders finished with eight shots, four on net, with two shots each from Chris Geddis, Grant Murray and Cole Werthmuller, while Henry Hutchinson and Brady Shapiro also added shots.
COLE TRAIN
Cole Werthmuller has been on a tear lately, scoring in three of his last five contests for the Raiders while also recording a season-best seven shots in the Oct. 7 match against Robert Morris. His 22 shots are the second-most on the roster overall while his 13 shots on frame lead the team.
SHARING THE SCORING
Wright State finds itself with three multi-goal scorers entering end of the regular season, paced by Cole Werthmuller's three goals. Reece Allbaugh and Henry Hutchinson each have two goals, while the Raiders have also seen six other players chip in one goal each.
DOWN THE STRETCH
The Raiders are playing four of their final six regular season contests on the road, a task that began October 10 at Bellarmine. The road stretch features two non-conference matches and Horizon League matchups at Oakland and Cleveland State. The Raiders will also host Detroit Mercy and Northern Kentucky at home as part of the final stretch.
THREE'S COMPANY
The three second half goals by Wright State on September 19 against Bowling Green matched the most goals in a game this season for the Raiders, who also found the back of the net three times in a 3-3 draw against Saint Francis (PA) on September 2.
Â
FIRST BUT NOT LAST
Wright State's 1-0 win over Milwaukee on September 16 was the first victory for Alex Van der Sluijs as Raider head coach. Van der Sluijs, who spent the 2022 season as a Raider assistant, is no stranger to winning, having racked up 38 victories in four seasons at the helm of Wilmington College prior to coming to Wright State.
Â
PRESEASON POINTS
The Raiders got set for the season with a trio of exhibitions, traveling to face traditional power Indiana to cap the first week of preseason training (1-0 loss, 120 minutes) before home contests against Lake Erie (4-0 win, 105 minutes) and Thomas More (2-2 draw). Conner Osterholt recorded three of Wright State's six total goals, while Charlie Carpenter, Pete Schneider and Cole Werthmuller also all found the back of the net in exhibition action.
Â
NEXT UP
Following the meeting with Detroit Mercy, Wright State hits the road for a pair of upcoming matches. First the Raiders wrap up non-conference play with a trip to Duquesne on Wednesday before playing at Cleveland State next Saturday. Both matches are expected to be streamed on ESPN+.
