Three in double figures; Raiders slip up against Western Kentucky

DAYTON – Three players scored in double figures Tuesday night, led by Trey Calvin's game-high 34 points, but the Wright State men's basketball team fell 91-84 to visiting Western Kentucky inside the Nutter Center.
The Raiders now get set for a meeting against regional foe Miami (OH) next Tuesday night inside the Nutter Center.
Back-and-forth with six tied scores in the second half alone, Wright State (4-6) pulled within three at 87-84 on a Calvin three-pointer with 47 seconds to play, but would not get any closer as Western Kentucky (8-3) responded with a layup and a pair of made free throws and the Raiders came up empty on their final two possessions of the night.
Wright State scored the first six points of the night and 10 of the first 12 overall before a tight opening 20 minutes. The Raiders closed the first half on a 7-2 run to lead 43-40 at the intermission, but Western Kentucky tallied five of the first seven points in the second half to knot the score and set up the final 18-plus minutes of action.
Calvin and Tanner Holden each had 14 points at the halftime break, with Calvin notching 20 in the second half as he finished the night 14-of-25 shooting with five steals, four assists and two rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Holden was 6-of-15 from the floor with four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block as he and Alex Huibregtse logged 36 minutes. Huibregtse was the final Raider in double figures, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting while grabbing four rebounds.
Andrew Welage filled his stat line off the bench, collecting seven points while passing out six assists and adding four rebounds and a pair of steals. AJ Braun added eight points and had two blocks while he and Brandon Noel (five points) each had six rebounds.
Wright State ended the night shooting 47 percent from the floor (32-of-68) while connecting on four of 17 three-point attempts (24 percent). The Raiders were 16-of-21 (76 percent) from the free throw stripe but went to the line just eight times in the second half. Western Kentucky connected at 52 percent (36-of-69) overall and was 38 percent (8-of-21) from beyond the arc, going 11-of-19 (58 percent) at the free throw line.
Don McHenry finished with 30 points to lead three Western Kentucky players in double figures.
