DAYTON – The season continues for a pair of Wright State golfers, as
Tyler Goecke and
Mikkel Mathiesen have both earned a trip to the 2023 NCAA Championship as individuals. Goecke and Mathiesen learned they were part of the field Wednesday afternoon as part of the live Selection Show on the Golf Channel.
Goecke is coming off winning the Horizon League individual championship title and his second straight Horizon League Golfer of the Year honor last week, while Mathiesen was an All-League First Team selection after finishing in a tie for fourth at the HL Championship, his second straight top five finish after he captured the HL individual title last spring.
Goecke and Mathiesen will head to Bath, Michigan and will play in the regional held at Eagle Eye Golf Club.
The pair are just the second and third Raider golfers to earn an appearance in the NCAA Championship as an individual, joining former Wright State standout Ryan Wenzler, who went to the 2016 NCAA Regional after winning the Horizon League's individual title.
Goecke and Mathiesen will play a practice round on Sunday, May 14 before teeing off the regional with 18 holes each day from Monday-Wednesday, May 15-17 at the Eagle Eye Golf Club. Bath, Michigan is one of six regional sites that will all tee off around the country over those three days, with the National Championship teeing off May 26-31 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Goecke captured the 2023 Horizon League Championship individual title earlier this week, his second individual victory of the season, joining his win at the Xavier Invitational, while he added four second place finishes and finished inside the top 10 in 10 of 11 tournaments spanning the fall and spring slates. Mathiesen had three individual wins this season (Earl Yestingmeier Invitational, Sea Palms Invitational, Wright State Invitational) and added four other top 10 finishes to his season resume. Entering the postseason, Goecke's current 70.39 scoring average is the best single season average in Wright State program history, slightly ahead of his final scoring average 70.47 from last season. Mathiesen's current 71.00 scoring average is third best in program history.
