HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Kentucky – The Wright State women's soccer team ended its 2024 campaign at Northern Kentucky on Wednesday evening. The game stayed close, with neither team scoring, until NKU found the back of the net in the 81st minute, ending the night with a 1-0 victory.
Wright State ended the night with 13 shots, matching the Norse's 13 shots, while landing six on target to NKU's seven. Both teams recorded six saves on the night, while NKU bested the Raiders with six corner kicks to WSU's three.
Leading the way for WSU was
Caitlin Burger with five shots, three on target, followed by
Samara Nunn with three shots, one on target.
Ruby Dunlevy and
Olivia Mace each had one shot on target, while
Olivia Stroud put up two shots and
Kaylee Pham one.
Erin Baker logged all 90 minutes of play, recording six saves. Joining her in the complete game was Pham, followed by
Allison Charleston and Nunn with 82 minutes and Mace with 80 minutes.
The Raiders got off to a strong start, putting up five shots from the sixth minute to the seventh, three by Burger, and one each by Mace, Nunn, and Stroud. Dunlevy added another shot in the 19th, followed by Nunn in the 25th. Baker logged two saves in the first 45 minutes, first in the eighth and again 16th.
Burger took the first shot of the second half, putting it on target in the 48th minute. Pham followed with a shot in the 65th. The Norse gained their late advantage in the 81
st minute, as Emilie Doersching found the back of the net. The Raiders fought, adding three shots in the final minutes, one each by Burger, Nunn, and Stroud. Baker recorded saves in the 50th and 60th minutes, and again in the 74th and 78th minutes.
Wright State ended the season with five wins and two ties, putting the first win in the record book on September 1 in a 2-1 victory over Southern Indiana, following with a 3-0 shutout over Morehead State. The Raiders finished with a 3-5-2 Horizon League record, defeating Cleveland State on September 29, Oakland on October 13, and most recently Purdue Fort Wayne on October 20. They had ties against Green Bay (Sep. 19) and IU Indy (Oct. 17).
Baker was the first to earn Horizon League honors in the 2024 season, being named Defensive Player of the Week on October 21. Baker earned the honor after logging two complete games, allowing no goals while recording eight saves.
Mace was recently recognized for her work on and off the field, being named to the Horizon League All-Academic team on October 29. The 11-member list was voted on by the League's faculty athletics representatives. To be eligible, nominees must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, have completed at least one year at the member institution, and participated in 50 percent of the team's overall contests. This is Mace's second consecutive All-Academic recognition, being named an honorable mention for the 2023 season. Additionally, Mace has been named to the Horizon League Honor Roll in every semester of eligibility.
