
Golf tees off 2024 spring slate in Texas

LAREDO, TX – The Wright State golf team tees off its spring 2024 schedule Monday morning at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club. Action will begin with 8 a.m. CT shotgun starts on both Monday and Tuesday.

Teams will play 36 holes Monday with the final round coming Tuesday morning at Laredo Country Club , which will play as a 7,375-yard, par-72 layout.

The Raiders will compete in a 17-team field against Abilene Christian, Bowling Green, Houston Christian, Illinois State, Lamar, Lipscomb, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, New Mexico State, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston, Troy, ULM, Western Carolina and host Houston.

Wright State, who tallied a sixth-place finish in this event to open last spring's slate, begin their 2024 spring schedule after being voted as the top team in the Horizon League preseason poll for the fifth straight season.

Wright State tallied a trio of top five team finishes this fall in five total fall tournaments. Wright State finished with three team tournament wins in 11 total events last year spanning the fall and spring schedule, adding four second place finishes as the Raiders were sixth or better in all 11 events in 2022-23. Returners from that squad include Shane Ochs, who was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, and Mikkel Mathiesen, who earned his second straight Horizon League first team nod. Mathiesen and former Raider Tyler Goecke, who was named HL Golfer of the Year, each earned a trip to the 2023 NCAA Championship as individuals, where Mathiesen finished six-under in a tie for fifth individually at the regional. Mathiesen and Goecke were both named to the NCAA Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team for their play last season.
