Raider Volleyball unveils 2024 schedule

DAYTON — Winners of four of the last five regular Horizon League championships with four of NCAA tournament appearances, the Wright State volleyball program and head coach Travers Green announced its 2024 schedule on Monday afternoon. The schedule that includes nine conference matchups inside McLin Gymnasium and Raiders will again host the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational in September.

The Raiders will visit Cincinnati for their lone exhibition match ahead of the regular season, when they will open action with tournament play at Ohio University. Wright State kicks off its home slate with the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational on September 6-8, hosting in-state foes Dayton and Bowling Green, along with UMBC, before playing in tournament action at Ohio State the following weekend.

The Horizon League scheduling model has changed for the 2024 season, with conference opponents playing each other on back-to-back dates on Fridays and Saturdays at one location this year. The Raiders will have four home double dips and four weekends on the road against the same opponent, while the schedule does feature home-and-home Tuesday matchups with Northern Kentucky.

The Raiders begin Horizon League play with three straight home contests, beginning with Northern Kentucky (Oct. 1) and Cleveland State (Oct. 4 and 5) before going on the road two straight weekends to take on Youngstown State (Oct. 11 and 12) and Milwaukee (Oct. 18 and 19).

Wright State closes the regular season with six of its final nine matches at home inside McLin Gymnasium, hosting Green Bay (Oct. 25 and 26), Robert Morris (Nov. 1 and 2) and Purdue Fort Wayne (Nov. 8 and 9) down the stretch. Sandwiched in between those home matchups is a quick road visit to Northern Kentucky on Oct. 29, while the Raiders close the regular season at Oakland (Nov. 15 and 16).

The Horizon League Championship will take place November 22-24 at the site of the regular season champion. The Raiders and McLin Gymnasium have taken on hosting duties for the 2019, Spring 2021, 2023 and 2024 championships.

Last fall Wright State posted a 21-11 overall record, including a 15-3 mark in HL play, on the way to the Horizon League regular season and tournament titles and their fourth trip to the NCAA Championship in the last five seasons.

Former Wright State standout Callie Martin was named the HL Player of the Year honor while Katie Meyer earned Setter of the Year honors and Travers Green was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Wright State recorded three First Team honors, with former Raider Megan Alders joining Martin and Meyer on the top team, while Jenny Wessling and Reilly Zegunis each earned Second Team recognition and Zegunis was also named to the All-Freshman Team.

Following the season, Martin was named an Honorable Mention All-American by both the American Volleyball Coaches Association and VolleyballMag.com.

Cincinnati (Aug. 24, Cincinnati, OH; exhibition)
- Cincinnati finished 2023 with a 12-16 overall mark and a 5-13 record in its first season in the Big 12, compiling a 5-9 record at home. The Raiders hosted Cincinnati last season, falling in four sets, and have faced the Bearcats 33 times in regular season action over the years.

Appalachian State (Aug. 30, Athens, OH; season opener)
- Appalachian State tallied a 14-15 overall record in 2023 with a 4-12 mark in the Sun Belt Conference, recording a 3-2 record in true neutral site matches. The Raiders are 4-1 all-time in the series that dates back to 1980, with the last meeting coming during neutral site tournament play in September 2018.

Xavier (Aug. 31, Athens, OH)
- Xavier compiled an 18-12 overall mark with an 11-7 Big East record a season ago, with a 2-3 mark in true neutral site matches. Wright State and Xavier have faced off 37 times, with the first meeting coming in 1973 and the most recent matchup in September 2019.

Ohio (Aug. 31, Athens, OH)
- Ohio finished 2023 with an 18-13 overall mark and a 13-5 record in the MAC, tallying a 7-5 record at home last season. The Raiders and Ohio have met 25 times previously, first in 1973 and most recently in 1998.

Dayton (Sept. 6, McLin Gym)
- The 2023 season saw the Dayton finish at 32-3 overall as champions of the A-10 as the Flyers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Raiders and Dayton have played each season recently dating back to the Spring 2021 campaign, opening the series in 1973, and have faced each other 62 times in the all-time series.

UMBC (Sept. 7, McLin Gym)
- UMBC finished 17-8 overall with an 8-2 mark in America East action in 2023, winning the regular season and tournament titles before falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Raiders and UMBC have only met once previously, a UMBC four-set win in 1997 neutral site action.

Bowling Green (Sept. 8, McLin Gym)
- Bowling Green tallied a 19-13 overall record in 2023 with an 11-7 mark in the MAC and a 7-6 mark in road contests. Wright State and Bowling Green will meet for the second straight season after a four-set battle last September and have met 32 times overall dating back to 1974.

Buffalo (Sept. 13, Columbus, OH)
- Buffalo finished 23-9 overall with a 13-5 MAC record a season ago, claiming the MAC East regular season title before falling in the MAC Tournament semifinals and in the opening round of the NIVC Tournament. Buffalo was 5-3 in true neutral site matches a year ago, and will face off against the Raiders for just the third time, with Wright State winning the previous meetings in 1997 and 2008.

Miami (FL) (Sept. 14, Columbus, OH)
- Miami recorded an 18-12 overall record with a 10-8 mark in the ACC in 2023, tallying a 3-0 record in true neutral site matches as it advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Wright State and Miami have never faced each other on the volleyball court.

Ohio State (Sept. 15, Columbus, OH)
- Ohio State was 11-18 overall with an 8-12 Big Ten record last season, recording a 6-6 record at home. Wright State and Ohio State have previously met 10 times, with the last matchup coming in 2001 with the first meeting back in November 1976.

Ball State (Sept. 20, Muncie, IN)
- Ball State finished 2023 with a 17-15 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the MAC, falling in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals before advancing to the second round of the NIVC Tournament. Wright State won last season's meeting as the two teams have faced 23 times overall dating back to 1975, including in three of the last five seasons dating back to 2019.

- Butler notched a 13-16 overall record with a 7-11 Big East mark in 2023, including falling in three sets to the Raiders last September, but was 7-6 at home last season. Wright State has met its former Horizon League foe 54 times overall, first in 1982, while last season's contest was the first matchup since 2016.

- IU Indianapolis finished 2023 with a 9-20 overall record and a 3-15 Horizon League mark, winning five of their matches at home. The Raiders tallied a pair of three set sweeps last season and now lead the all-time series 16-8.

- Northern Kentucky tallied an 18-13 overall mark last season with a 12-6 HL record, going 8-4 at home and 6-6 on the road. Wright State and NKU split their two meetings last season, with each winning on its home court, and have met 46 times in program history dating back to 1977.

Cleveland State (Oct. 4 and 5, McLin Gym)
- Cleveland State ended 2023 with a 17-14 overall record and a 10-8 Horizon League record, finishing with more wins on the road (eight) than at home (six). The Raiders grabbed three wins last season against the Vikings, including in the HL Tournament semifinals, and now leads the all-time series 45-37.

- Youngstown State recorded a 9-20 overall record and a 4-14 HL mark last season, with the Raiders grabbing a pair of sweeps in the teams' meetings. Riley Jarrett was named the 11th head coach in YSU history this spring, entering an all-time series that Wright State leads 43-12.

Milwaukee (Oct. 18 and 19, Milwaukee, WI)
- Milwaukee was 21-12 overall last season with a 13-5 Horizon League record, grabbing 10 wins at home and eight on the road. The Raiders and Panthers split their meetings in 2023, with each winning in four sets at home, and have met 69 times in a series that dates back to 1980.

- Robert Morris finished 7-22 last season with a 4-14 Horizon League record, tallying just one win in true road matches and a pair of neutral site victories. The Raiders won both 2023 meetings in four sets and now lead the short all-time series 10-0.

Purdue Fort Wayne (Nov. 8 and 9, McLin Gym)
- Purdue Fort Wayne ended 2023 with a 10-20 overall record and a 5-13 Horizon League record, finishing with five wins on the road. The Raiders grabbed a pair of sweeps last season against the Mastodons and lead the all-time series 17-10.

Oakland (Nov. 15 and 16, Rochester, MI)
