DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team jumped out the gates on Friday night and took the opening set over No. 7 Pitt, but the visitors rallied for a four-set win as the Raiders set a new program attendance record on the first night of the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek Invitational.
Playing in the Nutter Center for the first time since the 1991 season, Wright State (3-3) took the opening set as 1,239 fans cheered on in approval, surpassing the previous mark of 1,096 set last season against Dayton in McLin Gymnasium. The Raiders are back in action on Saturday afternoon against Ohio State in a 5 p.m. first serve.

The Raiders notched the first three points, and seven of the first 10 points overall, in the opening set before Pitt (6-2) responded and the first set went back-and-forth. Five straight Pitt points pushed their lead to 22-17 before Wright State answered four consecutive points to get back into the set and closed the set with 10 of the final 13 points, including pushing off a Pitt set point, to grab the early advantage.
Pitt took set two, 25-18, before another tight set in the third that the visitors eventually won 25-22. After an early Pitt run, the Raiders again fought back throughout the set, rolling off a 7-2 run late to knot the set at 22 before Pitt closed with the set win. Wright State tallied four of the first five points in set four before Pitt answered with eight straight points to take control of the set and wrap things up with a 25-11 fourth set victory.
The Raiders finished the night hitting .194 as a group, highlighted by a .342 hitting percentage in the opening set and a third set .306 mark, while Pitt ended with a .333 overall hitting percentage.
Mya Ayro led Wright State with 17 kills, adding a pair of blocks, while
Katie Sowko notched another double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs as the pair paced the Raider attack.
Reilly Zegunis and
Taylor Bransfield added eight and seven kills each, respectively, while Zegunis added three blocks and Bransfield turned away one of her own.
Lauren Yacobucci passed out 43 of the 47 Raider helpers while collecting seven digs, with
Audrey Hudson finished with a career-best nine digs and
Greta McKee had eight digs.
Taygan Corstange led Wright State defensively with a match-high 15 digs, her fourth double digit dig effort in six matches to begin her collegiate career.
Reigning AVCA national player of the year Olivia Babcock tallied 20 kills to lead all players, while Dagmar Mourits had 11 kills and Blaire Bayless finished with 10 kills. Bre Kelley just missed a double-double with nine kills and nine blocks while Brooke Mosher had 46 assists and four Pitt players collected double digit digs.
