Women’s Soccer Readies to Host Detroit Mercy


DAYTON- The Wright State women's soccer team (4-5) return home to Alumni Field for their Horizon League home opener against Detroit Mercy. Kickoff Is slated for 1 p.m. and the first 50 fans will receive a Wright State soccer scarf.

LAST TIME OUT
The Wright State women's soccer team started off Horizon League play on the right foot shutting out Purdue Fort Wayne 1-0 on the road Thursday night.


The Raiders controlled the pace of play for a majority of the first 45 minutes, firing 11 shots on goal, five of which found the net, and had six corner kick opportunities.
 
Purdue Fort Wayne committed a foul within their own 18-yard box that would award Wright State a penalty kick in the 56th minute. Senior, Amber Branum, would step up to take the penalty kick for the Raiders and fire it past the Mastodon's goalkeeper to give Wright State their 1-0 lead.
 
The Wright State defense stepped up again recording their third consecutive shutout and extended their streak up to 308 minutes of play without allowing a goal. Kiera Sarka played all 90 minutes in minutes in net en route to her first solo shutout of the 2025 season.
 
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit Mercy enters Sunday's match at 2-6-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in Horizon League Play. The Titans opened conference play at home Thursday evening and drew with Cleveland State 3-3. Offensively Detroit Mercy is led by Abbey Lodato, the senior is the Horizon League leader in points (17) and goals (7)

HISTORY VS. DETROIT MERCY
Sunday's match up will be the 38th meeting all-time between Wright State and Detroit Mercy, a series the Raiders lead 17-15-5. The Titans came out on top 4-3 when the two squads met last season in the Motor City.

Following Sunday's match the Raiders will hit the road again and head over Indianapolis for a match Thursday evening match with IU Indy. First touch is currently slated to for 7 p.m.
 
DEFENSE IN FORM
The Wright State defense has really stepped up over the last three matches recording three straight 1-0 shutout victories. The Raiders haven't allowed a goal in 308 minutes of play dating back to the 52nd minute of the Bellarmine game on September 4. Leigha Lauer and Kiera Sarka have both seen action between the posts over the three-game span. Each goal keeper has recorded a solo shutout with the pair splitting the one at Central Michigan.
 
BURGER QUEEN
Wright State juniors, Caitlin Burger, has been a spark for the Raiders offensively. Her seven points and three goals are both good for the team lead. Burger has recorded a goal in three separate contests, scoring against Fairmont State, Louisville, and Chicago State.

SIZING UP THE 2025 SQUAD
WSU welcomes eight newcomers — including seven freshmen — to this season's roster. The Raiders' 34-player roster includes the seven freshmen, six sophomores, 10 juniors, nine seniors and a pair of graduate students.
