15 points from Cooper, Holden not enough Thursday night

DAYTON – A second half scoring push came up short for the Wright State men's basketball team on Thursday night, as the Raiders fell 77-74 to visiting Detroit Mercy inside the Nutter Center.

Wright State (16-10, 11-4 Horizon) remains at the top of the Horizon League standings despite the loss thanks to a Thursday loss by second-place Oakland. The Raiders have five regular season games remaining, beginning with a Sunday afternoon 2 p.m. road contest at Cleveland State. Fans can follow the all of Sunday's action several ways – on ESPN+, via live stats or by tuning in to the Wright State Radio Network – 101.5 FM 'The Fridge' and WING 1410 AM. Chris Collins and Jim Brown will have all the play-by-play action on the radio feed.

Thursday night, Detroit Mercy (11-13, 8-7 Horizon) had a pair of first half scoring runs and took a 40-34 lead into the break after closing the half on an 11-4 run. After the visitors pushed the lead to 12 – their largest of the night – in the opening minutes of the second half, Wright State used an 18-9 run to pull to within three at 59-56 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Moments later, the Raiders rolled off another large run, this time scoring 16 of 18 points, to lead 72-65 with five minutes to play, but Detroit Mercy chipped away down the stretch and hit what turned out to be the game winner with 10 seconds remaining.

Michael Cooper and Andrea Holden each finished with 15 points, with Cooper notching all 15 points in the second half – including a personal 10-point scoring run in the middle of the larger Raider second half scoring spurt. TJ Burch was the third Wright State player in double figures with 11 points, while Kellen Pickett finished with nine points while adding a game-best four blocks.

Wright State shot 41 percent for the contest (26-of-64) with seven three-pointers, six of which came in the second half (7-25, 28 percent). Detroit Mercy settled on a 53 percent shooting night (32-of-61) and hit four of its five three-pointers in the first 20 minutes (5-13, 39 percent).

Orlando Lovejoy finished with 18 points to lead Detroit Mercy, who also got 10 points from London Maiden and nine points each from Je'kel Cotton and Tyler Spratt in the road win.
