The Wright State women's basketball team trailed by only five at the half, but a 17-0 UIC run to start the second half proved to be too much for the Raiders to overcome as the Flames went on to a 68-46 Horizon League win Saturday afternoon at the Nutter Center.
UIC led throughout most of the first half, but WSU stayed close and was down just 23-20 after a Brittney Whiteside jumper with 1:24 left.
A Briana Hinkle layup, however, gave the Flames their five-point halftime margin and UIC followed by scoring the first 17 points, seven of those coming from LaShonda Grant, to go up 42-20 at the 14:45 mark.
Wright State could get no closer than 17 the rest of the way as the Raiders shot 35 percent for the contest compared to 41 percent for UIC, including 52 percent in the second half. The Flames (9-9, 3-3 Horizon) also forced 29 turnovers while committing only 15, resulting in a 25-11 differential in points off of turnovers, and had a 36-18 edge in points in the paint.
Whiteside led WSU with 18 points while Whitney Lewis added 14.
Grant was the only UIC player in double figures as she had 16, but all 13 Flames that saw action scored.
Wright State, now 4-12 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League, heads to the Motor City next Saturday, January 20, to take on the Detroit Titans in a 2:00 contest.
