The Wright State men's soccer team used almost all of the allotted time in their double-overtime victory over Valparaiso, 1-0. The Green and Gold scored with just 12 seconds left on the clock to win their third Horizon League match of the season and extend their winning streak to four.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, as WSU held a 7-2 advantage in shots and forced Valparaiso keeper Ryan Schwarz to make three saves.
Then in the second half, a red card forced the Crusaders to play a man short for the final 30 minutes and WSU took to the offensive. The Green and Gold launched 13 shots and directed four of those shots on goal in the stanza.
The first overtime saw three total shots, two for WSU and one for Valparaiso, and Wright State keeper Tebias Mason made one save.
In the second overtime, the Raiders again sent a bevy of shots towards the VU net and as the sun set on Alumni Field the Raiders got a lift from freshman Brian Cothern. The rookie took the ball at midfield and dribbled between the VU defense before sending a shot towards the net from 18 yards out. The VU keeper dove to his left, but Cothern's ball snuck past and into the net for the golden goal.
The unassisted marker was the first of Cothern's career and pushed WSU's winning streak to four matches.
Mason has now surrendered one goal in his last 379:38 in goal and helped WSU stay a perfect 3-0-0 in overtime matches this season. The senior made three saves in the match, compared to 11 for his counterpart from VU, and posted his fourth shutout of the season.
The Raiders will head to Indianapolis on Thursday, November 1 to play their final Horizon League match of the season with Butler. The Raiders and Bulldogs will take to the pitch at 4:00.
