The Wright State women's basketball team hung close with Eastern Michigan for a half, only to see the Eagles explode for 48 points the final 20 minutes for a 74-41 victory Saturday afternoon in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
The Raiders went up 9-5 six minutes into the contest on layups by Sierra Crayton and Shey Peddy and regained the lead at 17-16 with 3:56 to go in the half on a pair of Erica Richardson foul shots. Eastern Michigan, though, closed the period with a 10-2 run, five each from Kelly Watts and Alyssa Pittman, to take a 26-19 advantage into the break.
An Erica Richardson layup drew Wright State to within four at 28-24 with 18:34 remaining, but the Eagles blew the game open from there by scoring the next 16 points, including three Pittman three-pointers, and gradually built on the margin the rest of the way.
EMU shot 48 percent for the game, 64 percent in the second half, while WSU was at 35 percent overall, 33 percent after halftime. The Eagles also hit 11 of 18 threes, six of eight the final 20 minutes, compared to just three of 13 for the Raiders.
Eastern Michigan also hit 13 of 17 foul shots to Wright State's six of 15 and forced the Raiders into 27 turnovers while committing 20, resulting in a 31-13 differential in points off of turnovers.
Peddy led WSU with 14 points and five rebounds and Kanisha Ward added nine points and six assists, but no other Raider had more than six.
Pittman finished with a game-high 26 for Eastern Michigan (3-0), including seven three-pointers, while Watts had a near double-double of 13 points and nine rebounds.
Wright State, now 0-3 on the season, faces its third straight Mid-American Conference opponent on Wednesday as the Raiders travel to Millett Hall to take on the Miami RedHawks in a 7:00 contest.
