The Wright State women's basketball team trailed by just two at the half, but managed just four field goals in the second half as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons pulled away for a 64-46 decision at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Wednesday night.
Wake Forest led 14-5 early, but after consecutive threes from Kanisha Ward trimmed the margin to three, the Raiders hung close the rest of the half as the Demon Deacons never had an advantage greater than six the rest of the period. A Sierra Crayton layup at the 3:48 mark cut the deficit to 22-21 and Wright State was down only 25-23 at the break as Tatianna Hall connected on a baseline jumper with just under a minute remaining in the half.
That jumper, however, turned out to be the last field goal for the Raiders until LaShawna Thomas had a layup with 9:43 to play. During that stretch, Wake Forest outscored WSU 20-4 to open up a 45-27 lead.
Wright State connected on four of 20 shots over the final 20 minutes to finish the night at 28 percent overall while Wake Forest shot 47 percent for the game, 54 percent in the second half. The Demon Deacons also dominated the boards 46-22, including a 20-10 edge on the offensive end, and led in points in the paint 30-12.
Shey Peddy led the Raiders with 12 points while Ward had 11, Crayton 10 along with six rebounds, and Hall nine points off the bench.
Corinne Groves paced Wake Forest (8-1) with 12 points while three other Demon Deacons had nine each.
Wright State, now 2-6 overall, is off until Tuesday, December 11, when the Raiders travel down I-75 to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats. Tip-off is at 7:00.
