The Wright State women's basketball team trailed 18-4 early, but eventually build a 12-point lead in the second half and held off a late Loyola rally to defeat the Ramblers 66-60 Saturday afternoon at the Gentile Center.
WSU hit just two of its first seven shots and had six turnovers as Loyola hit eight of its first 13 attempts in going up 18-4 with 11:52 remaining in the first half. The Raiders, however, would dominate the rest of the period, outscoring the Ramblers 29-11, including 13 from Tyanda Hammock and eight by Sierra Crayton, to go up 33-29 at the break.
Wright State continued to build on the lead in the early stages of the second half, going on a 10-2 run over the opening four minutes, six coming from Brittney Whiteside and four by Danielle Duncan, to take its biggest advantage of the contest at 43-31.
Loyola, however, gradually chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the game at 56 with 6:51 to play following a three-point play by Elyse VanBogaert.
After the two teams exchanged scores, Whiteside put the Raiders ahead to stay with a driving layup with 2:53 left. Two Duncan foul shots at the 1:46 mark made it a four-point game, but a Maggie McCloskey jumper in the lane drew Loyola to within two with 1:35 to play.
WSU, however, sealed the win by scoring the final four points of the contest on a Whiteside basket with 31 seconds remaining and two Kanisha Ward free throws at the 20.9-second mark.
Wright State shot 46 percent from the field, including 54 percent in the first half, while Loyola shot 42 percent. The Ramblers held a slight 36-32 rebounding advantage, but the Raiders hit 17 of 24 from the foul line compared to 11 of 15 for Loyola.
Whiteside led all scorers with 18 points for Wright State, 12 coming in the second half, and also had seven rebounds and four assists while Hammock added 17, 15 in the first half, and Crayton had 13.
Jenna Real and Marquise Hanser each had 13 to pace Loyola (6-17, 4-8 Horizon) while McCloskey scored all 10 of her points in the second half.
Wright State, now 6-16 overall and 4-7 in the Horizon League, hosts Detroit on Thursday, February 15, starting at 7:00.
