The Wright State women's basketball team shot 40 percent from the field, but could not overcome 22 turnovers as the Raiders dropped a 63-55 Horizon League decision to the UIC Flames at the UIC Pavilion Thursday afternoon.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as WSU shot 29 percent and UIC 27 percent, but the Flames led 25-17 at the break. The Raiders, though, rallied to within one by scoring the first seven points of the second half on a Whitney Lewis three and layups from Sierra Crayton and Tyanda Hammock.
UIC, however, held on to the lead and eventually extended it to 39-30 following two foul shots by Briana Hinkle. The Raiders closed to within four twice, including 43-39 with 6:18 left on two Brittney Whiteside foul shots, but the Flames went on a 12-4 run to go 57-45 at the 1:56 mark.
Wright State trimmed the deficit to 60-55 on a Steph Comisar three with 14 seconds left, but UIC sealed the win by hitting three of four free throws the rest of the way.
The Raiders shot 40 percent for the game compared to 37 percent for UIC, but the Flames held an 18-12 edge in points off of turnovers as they forced the Raiders into 22 turnovers while committing 13. The Flames also had a 42-34 rebounding advantage and made 20 of 33 from the foul line to just six of 12 for WSU.
Lewis nearly had a double-double of 13 points and nine rebounds for Wright State, while Comisar also had 13 and Whiteside added 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists as she moved into second place on the Raider all-time scoring list (1315).
Jessie Miller paced UIC (14-9, 8-3 Horizon) with 14 points while LaShonda Grant had 11.
Wright State, now 5-16 overall and 3-7 in the Horizon League, wraps up the Chicago roadtrip Saturday with a 4:00 Eastern visit to Loyola.
