After over four hours of rain, the Wright State baseball team couldn't muster up enough offense, falling to UIC in the Horizon League Tournament Championship game. The Raiders fell 14-2 and collected six hits, three of those extra base hits, in their season finale.
The Raiders threatened in the first inning as Jeremy Hamilton walked to get things started and advanced to third on a double from Justin Parker. It was the 26th double of the season for Parker and ranks him second in league history in doubles in a season.
The Flames tallied a run in the first inning on WSU starter Scott Ruthven to take an early lead. Chad Schroeder walked to lead off the inning and Micky Pingree doubled to down the left field line to stake UIC to a 1-0 lead.
In the second, UIC added six more runs, two coming on an Eric Whinery home run over the left field wall and three coming when Jake Carr went deep. Larry Gempp Jr. added an RBI in the inning as UIC pushed the lead to 7-0.
Ruthven allowed seven runs on seven hits in his second start of the season. The junior threw two innings and falls to 1-1 overall in 2007.
Alex Kaminsky came on for WSU in the third inning and held the Flames scoreless in the third inning but surrendered four runs in the fourth inning to push UIC's lead to 11-0.
Ross Vagedes came on in the fifth inning and allowed three runs, all coming on a Gempp Jr. home run. Vagedes recorded one out and was relieved by Dan Barker, who coaxed the last two players to fly out.
Barker threw 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out two batters and allowed only one hit.
Jeremy Hamilton struck with his third home run of the tournament. Hamilton got the Raiders on the scoreboard for the 57 consecutive game this season.
The Raiders posted at least one run in every game this season and were held to only one run seven times this season. It is the fifth time in school history that WSU went an entire season without being shutout.
Greg Robinson came on to thrown the final inning scoreless for the Green and Gold.
Offensively for the Green and Gold, Parker and Hamilton each collected two hits in the contest. Oeder and Brian Shoup each collected a hit in their final game in the Green and Gold.
The Green and Gold end the season with a record of 36-22 overall and posted a League record of 21-9. The 21 league wins are the most in school history and WSU becomes only the second school in modern league history to post 20 or more wins in a season.
