DAYTON- The Wright State baseball team (12-14, 6-1 HL) erased a five-run deficit Thursday afternoon en route to a 9-5 series-opening win over Northern Kentucky.
Due to forecasted afternoon showers, The Raiders have moved up the two remaining game times against Northern Kentucky this weekend. Friday's game will now begin at 12 p.m., and Saturday's game will have an 11 a.m. first pitch.
After two scoreless frames, Northern Kentucky would open the scoring with a five-spot in the top of the third. Mark Novak got the Norse on the board with an RBI single to left before Jake Paulick parked a grand slam over the wall in left field.
The Raiders would chip into the Northern Kentucky lead with three runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles from Cy Turner and Hunter Warren. Warren would come in to score shortly after on a groundout to the pitcher.
Wright State would get another run in the bottom of the fourth when Braylen Blomquist came in to score on a wild pitch.
Keegan Holmstrom would give the Raiders the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run inside-the-park Little League home run. The first baseman served an RBI single out to center field that slipped underneath the glove of Northern Kentucky's centerfielder. The ball rolled all the way out to the wall, allowing Holmstrom to come around to score.
Cam Allen picked up his second straight win with six innings on Thursday afternoon. Other than the five runs on four hits conceded in the third, Allen pitched five no-hit innings, striking out nine Northern Kentucky batters.
Patrick Fultz would give the Raiders two runs of insurance in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run opposite-field homer. The home run is Fultz's fifth of the season and fourth at Nischwitz Stadium.
JP Peltier would launch his fourth homer of the season in the bottom of the eighth, sending a no-doubter deep over the wall in left field.
Michael Zielinski was once again the lone man out of the Wright State bullpen, pitching three no-hit innings with two strikeouts en route to his second save in as many weeks.
