A 15-3 run midway through the second half gave Wright State a 10-point lead and the Raiders held on down the stretch for a 63-57 win over IPFW in women's basketball action at the Nutter Center Monday night.
IPFW took an early 11-4 advantage thanks in part to threes from Jordan Zuppe, Sarah Haluska and Courtney Reed, only to WSU answer with seven straight, capped off on a triple by Kanisha Ward, to tie it with 11:46 remaining in the first half.
Another Ward three put the Raiders up 25-20 at the 3:38 mark, but another Reed three and a putback from Laura Gerhardt in the final seconds drew the Mastodons to within two at the break at 27-25.
Wright State shot 50 percent over the opening 20 minutes compared to 35 percent for IPFW, but the Mastodons countered by hitting seven of 13 from behind the arc while the Raiders were three of seven.
The game was tied on four occasions over the first eight minutes of the second half before Reed gave the Mastodons a 39-37 advantage on two foul shots with 10:30 to play. WSU, however, would go on its decisive 15-3 run from there, a burst highlighted by six consecutive points from Ta-myra Davis and threes by Shey Peddy and Maria Bennett.
A pair of Chelsey Jackson layups, though, cut the margin to 56-52 with 2:56 left and IPFW hung close the rest of the way until two Ward free throws at the 15.4-second mark made it 62-55.
The Raiders hit 14 of 27 shots in the second half to finish at 51 percent overall while the Mastodons shot 46 percent, but just one of six from three-point range, to end the night at 40 percent. WSU led in rebounds (34-25), points in the paint (30-16) and second-chance points (16-5).
For the second straight game, Davis tied her career high in scoring with 19 points, 13 of those coming in the second half, and added nine rebounds while Ward chipped in 12 off the bench to lead WSU to a 20-5 advantage in bench scoring. Peddy had 10 points along with nine boards and six assists while Molly Fox had eight points.
Jackson paced all scorers with 20 for IPFW (2-9) while Reed had 13 and Zuppe 11.
Wright State (4-7) now turns its attention to Horizon League play as the Raiders head to Chicago this weekend for a pair of games, taking on UIC on Saturday, January 3, and Loyola on Monday, January 5. Both games start at 5:30 Dayton time.
