Wright State rallied from a seven-point second half deficit to tie the game at 45 with eight minutes to play, only to see Green Bay close out the game on a 17-6 run as the Phoenix remained undefeated in the Horizon League women's basketball standings with a 62-51 decision over the Raiders Thursday night at the Nutter Center.
Green Bay jumped out to a 7-2 lead five minutes into the contest before WSU went on a 9-1 run, five coming from LaShawna Thomas, to go up 11-8 with 12:15 remaining in the first half. A Thomas three-point play made it 15-11, but the Phoenix responded with a 12-4 burst of its own, capped off with threes by Celeste Hoewisch and Heather Golden, to regain the lead at 23-19.
A Shey Peddy jumper again gave Wright State the edge at 24-23 with just over a minute left, but Green Bay tallied the final five points, including a Rachel Porath buzzer-beating layup, to take a 28-24 halftime advantage.
The Phoenix shot 56 percent from the field compared to 46 percent for the Raiders, but WSU led 16-10 in points in the paint and 13-11 in points off of turnovers as they forced Green Bay into 14 miscues while committing 13.
A Peddy layup gave Wright State a 36-33 lead with 15:47 to play, but the Phoenix again had an answer as it scored nine straight points. The Green Bay margin was 45-38 following a Kati Harty three at the 9:39 mark, only to see the Raiders come back and tie the game with seven unanswered of their own, the final points being a Molly Fox layup with 8:02 left.
Three three-pointers, two from Porath, though, put the Phoenix up for good and WSU would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Green Bay shot 50 percent overall, including nine of 19 from behind the arc, while the Raiders hit for 44 percent, but were just one of 13 from three-point range. Wright State led in rebounds (29-26) and points in the paint (30-22), but the Phoenix held a slight 20-19 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Peddy led WSU with 17 points while Davis had 14 off the bench and Thomas 10. Kanisha Ward added six assists.
Porath paced all scorers with 19 for Green Bay (20-3, 12-0 Horizon), 11 in the second half, while Lavesa Glover had 12.
Wright State (10-13, 6-6 Horizon) hosts Milwaukee Saturday at 4:30 before the Raider men's team takes on Detroit at 7:00.
