Kim Demmings posted a double-double and three other Raiders scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough for the Wright State women's basketball team in a 79-70 setback to Loyola Saturday night at WSU's Nutter Center.
The Raiders came out on fire by scoring the first nine points of the contest, five of those by Demmings, but Loyola answered right back with a 15-2 run to take the lead. The Ramblers went up 26-19 on an Ayrealle Beavers three with 6:40 remaining in the first half before Wright State closed the period with a 16-9 run, six from Ivory James, to tie the game at 35 heading into halftime.
WSU shot 36 percent overall, but was six of 15 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes compared to 39 percent shooting for Loyola, who was two of eight from behind the arc.
Two Breanna Stucke foul shots at the 13:31 mark gave the Raiders a 46-41 edge until the Ramblers followed with 12 unanswered points, six by Taylor Johnson, to go in front to stay.
Wright State closed to within one twice before Loyola broke the game open with an 11-0 burst to make it 66-54 with 4:41 to play. The Raiders would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
The Ramblers shot 54 percent from the field in the second half to end up at 46 percent overall and also hit 19 of 23 foul shots for the game, 10 of 13 after halftime. WSU, meanwhile, shot just 28 percent in the second half to finish at 32 percent overall and was 18 of 26 at the stripe.
Demmings posted a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Raiders while Stucke scored a career-high 18 points, bettering the 15 she had against IUPUI on November 14. James had 12 off the bench and KC Elkins nearly had a double-double of 10 points and nine boards. Tayler Stanton added 10 rebounds as Wright State had a 48-36 edge on the boards.
Simone Law led Loyola (10-13, 5-5 Horizon) with a double-double of 24 points, 18 in the first half, and 10 rebounds while Johnson had 23 points, 18 coming after halftime, and Monica Albano chipped in 14.
Wright State (10-14, 4-7 Horizon) heads to the Windy City to take on UIC on Thursday, February 21, at 8:00 Eastern.
