The Wright State women's basketball team trailed by just four with 7:52 to play, but it was all Milwaukee the rest of the way as the Panthers pulled away for a 74-61 win over the Raiders Saturday at WSU's Nutter Center.
WSU led 8-3 early before Milwaukee used a 15-2 run to take an 18-10 lead with 8:08 remaining in the first half. The Panther advantage grew to 28-15 before the Raiders closed the half with a 10-2 run, seven coming from Kim Demmings, to trail 30-25 at the break.
Wright State eventually regained the lead at 45-44 on an Ivory James three with 13:31 left and only trailed 55-51 on a Demmings layup at the 7:52 mark, but Milwaukee followed with eight straight points, including two Angela Rodriguez threes, to push the lead back in double figures. The Raiders would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
UWM shot 49 percent from the field in the second half to end up at 44 percent overall, including 12 of 27 from three-point range, while WSU shot 38 percent. The Panthers also held a 48-32 rebounding edge and led 16-6 in second-chance points.
Demmings posted a double-double of 28 points and 10 rebounds, but was the only Raider to score in double figures.
Rodriguez led Milwaukee (8-16, 4-8 Horizon) with 19 points while Sami Tucker recorded a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Emily Decorah added 17 points.
Wright State (10-16, 4-9 Horizon) hits the road for a pair of games next week, traveling to Valparaiso on Thursday, February 28, for an 8:00 Eastern contest followed by Youngstown State on Saturday, March 2, at 2:00.
