Behind a 29 point, 12 rebound performance from Antania Hayes and three others scoring in double figures, the Wright State women's basketball team outscored Houston 31-16 the final 12:13 for a 75-61 victory over the Cougars Friday at the Lone Star Showcase in Cedar Park, Texas.
The Raiders scored the first six points of the contest and led 12-4 on a JJ Williams layup before Houston finished the quarter with a 7-2 run, including a desperation three at the buzzer by Alecia Smith.
A Lexi Smith putback made it 24-17 with 4:43 remaining in the second period, but again the Cougars came up with a late charge, trimming the halftime deficit to 29-28 by outscoring WSU 6-1 over the final 1:19.
Wright State came out strong to start the third quarter, outscoring Houston 13-2, seven coming from Demmings, to build a 42-30 lead with 7:11 to play, but again the Cougars made a comeback, going on a 15-2 burst to take the lead for the first time at 45-44 at the 2:48 mark.
That turned out to be only lead of the day for Houston, however, as a Hayes putback followed by an Emily Vogelpohl three put the Raiders back in front for good. After a Cougar basket, a Richelle van der Keijl basket and two Hayes free throws made it 53-47 heading into the fourth quarter.
A Hayes layup and two foul shots by the junior forward pushed the margin into double figures early in the final period and five later points from van der Keijl extended the lead to 64-51 with six minutes left.
The shooting percentage were nearly similar as WSU shot 43 percent compared to 40 percent for Houston, but the Raiders also hit 15 of 22 foul shot while the Cougars were nine of 13. Wright State also led in points in the paint (42-33), points off of turnovers (16-6) and second-chance points (22-13).
Hayes posted a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds, with 16 points and 10 rebounds coming in the second half. Three other Raiders scored in double figures as Demmings had 14, Vogelpohl 11 and van der Keijl 11.
Wright State (5-2) wraps up tournament play on Saturday against #24/23 George Washington at 2:30 Eastern.
