Six players scored in double figures as the Wright State women's basketball team rolled to a 107-44 win over Cincinnati Christian Tuesday afternoon as part of Education and Hoops Day at WSU's Nutter Center.
Back-to-back baskets by Antania Hayes broke an early 9-9 deadlock and after Macy Wingham hit a jumper to break that string, the Raiders scored the final 17 points of the opening quarter, six coming from Lexi Smith, to go up 30-11.
WSU then tacked on the first eight points of the second period and eventually built the advantage to 52-16 at the break.
Wright State shot 49 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes despite hitting just one of nine three-pointers while holding the Eagles to 18 percent shooting.
The margin grew to as much as 99-32 on an Alexyse Thomas layup with 4:39 to play before Cincinnati Christian outscored the Raiders 12-8 the rest of the way.
WSU shot 54 percent in the second half to finish at 51 percent overall and made 14 of 16 foul shots while CCU shot 26 percent after halftime to end up at 22 percent for the game. Wright State led 78-10 in points in the paint and led in points off of turnovers (27-4), second-chance points (28-2) and fast-break points (25-2).
The Raiders finished with a 70-30 rebounding edge, falling just two short of the single-game team rebound record of 72 set against Sinclair on January 10, 1978.
Smith posted career highs in points (20) and rebounds (14) as the sophomore forward came off the bench to record her first double-double of the season and third in her career. Five other WSU players reached double figures as Mackenzie Taylor also had 20 off the bench while Emily Vogelpohl had 14, Richelle van der Keijl and Kim Demmings 12 each and Antania Hayes 10.
Wright State (8-2) visits Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, December 13, at 4:00.
