Down five at the half, the Wright State women's basketball team started the second half with a 25-11 run and then held on down the stretch for a 73-62 win at UIC Saturday afternoon.
WSU led 11-7 early thanks to a pair of threes from Courtney Boyd and one by Breanna Stucke and the margin was still four until the Flames used an 8-1 run to go up 20-17. An Abby Jump three gave the Raiders the lead back at 24-22, only to see UIC close the period with a 11-4 burst to go up 33-28 at the break.
The Flames shot 41 percent from the field in the first half compared to 32 percent for Wright State.
A Boyd three keyed WSU on a 5-0 start to the second half to tie the game and a later Stucke triple gave the Raiders the lead for good at 40-39 with 14:40 to play. An 11-3 run then gave Wright State a 53-44 advantage at the 11:15 mark.
UIC cut the deficit to 61-59 on an Imani Moore layup with 3:07 left, but Boyd answered with a three and a Mingo layup pushed the margin back out to seven. The Flames would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Both teams shot 35 percent for the game, but the Raiders hit seven of 24 three-pointers while UIC missed all 12 of its attempts from behind the arc. WSU also went 23 of 34 at the foul line, 19 of 24 in the second half, compared to nine of 14 for the Flames.
Mingo led Wright State with 18 points, all but two coming after halftime, and dished out seven assists while Boyd had 14 and Richelle van der Keijl 13 off the bench along with nine rebounds. Stucke added 12 points and seven boards and Stanton chipped in seven points and 11 rebounds.
Ruvanna Campbell paced UIC (14-10, 4-7 Horizon) with a double-double of 19 points and 22 rebounds while Terri Bender and Moore had 12 each.
Wright State (19-6, 8-3 Horizon) wraps up the three-game road swing on Wednesday, February 18, with a 7:00 contest at Cleveland State.
