The Wright State men's soccer team clinched the #1 seed for next month's Horizon League Tournament and at least a share of the regular-season title Saturday night with a dramatic 2-1 overtime Senior Night victory over Milwaukee at Alumni Field.
The Raiders opened the scoring at the 35:07 mark of the first half as senior defender Kaique Fernandes scored his third goal of the season off a pass from junior midfielder AJ Paterson. It was the third assist of the year from Paterson.
Milwaukee, though, tied the match with a goal at the 72:23 mark of the second half, just the second goal allowed by WSU in eight league contests this season.
Paterson then provided the golden goal at the 97:30 mark of overtime as he headed in a shot off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Jackson Dietrich. It was the second goal of the season for Paterson and the eighth assist by Dietrich.
Wright State finished with a 14-13 edge in shots and led 12-7 in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Joel Sundell recorded five saves.
With the win, the Raiders clinched at least a share of their first-ever league regular-season title. WSU will also be the #1 seed and host of the league tournament semifinals and finals on November 10 and 12, respectively.
Wright State (10-5-2, 6-1-1 Horizon) closes out the regular season on Friday, November 4, with an 8:00 Eastern match at Valparaiso.
