Women Fall at Green Bay

Green Bay hit nine of 10 shots in the first quarter, including all seven from three-point range, and that proved to be too much for the Wright State women's basketball team to overcome as the Raiders fell to the Phoenix 62-41 in Horizon League action Saturday afternoon at the Kress Events Center.

WSU led 6-3 following a Lexi Smith three-point play at the 8:10 mark of the opening period and later tied the score at 12 after Chelsea Welch connected on a three-pointer with four minutes left, only to see Green Bay score the final 13 points of the stanza, the final 11 coming from Mehryn Kraker, to go up 25-12.

The margin was still 13 midway through the third quarter until the Phoenix went on another late period run, this time 9-0, to make it 53-31 heading into the final stanza.

Green Bay shot 42 percent from the field for the game, including nine of 21 from behind the arc, while Wright State shot 28 percent overall and hit six of 25 three-pointers.

Welch paced the Raiders with a career-best 25 points, eclipsing the 23 she scored at Eastern Illinois on November 17.  The 25 points tie for the most scored by a WSU player this season as Smith had 25 in the opener at Tennessee Tech on November 11.

Wright State (9-5, 1-1 Horizon) returns home for a pair of games next week to open the 2017 portion of its schedule, taking on Youngstown State on Thursday, January 5, at 5:00 followed by Cleveland State on Saturday, January 7, at 1:00.
