Men Hold Off Cleveland State

The Wright State men's basketball team hit 22 of 28 foul shots, including 14 of 16 in the second half, as the Raiders held off Cleveland State 55-51 in Horizon League action Thursday night at the WSU Nutter Center.

The first half featured nine ties and 11 lead changes, with the Raiders taking a 24-23 halftime lead on a Mark Alstork free throw in the closing seconds.

WSU shot 35 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while holding the Vikings to 27 percent.

Wright State extended the lead to 30-23 by scoring the first six points of the second half, four coming from Alstork, and the margin was still six until CSU closed to within two at 44-42 with 6:32 to play.

The Raider lead was three until Mike La Tulip connected on a key three to make it 53-47 at the 2:11 mark.

Cleveland State again drew to within two and had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but could not convert and Justin Mitchell hit two foul shots with 11 seconds remaining for the final margin.

Both teams struggled from the field as WSU ended up at 35 percent while CSU was at 37 percent.  The Raiders, though, hit 22 of 28 from the foul line, 14 of 16 after halftime, while the Vikings were 13 of 19, 5 of 9 in the second half.

Steven Davis paced Wright State with 15 points while Alstork posted a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.  Mitchell added nine points.

Wright State (11-5, 2-1 Horizon) hosts Youngstown State on Saturday, January 7, at 4:00.
