The Wright State volleyball team defeated Green Bay 3-2 tonight (20-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21,15-11) in their first home conference match of the 2017 season.
First Set Highlights
Green Bay started off the first set with the first kill on the right side from their top hitter, Lydia DeWeese. Green Bay continued on a 3-0 run before Wright State's senior outside hitter
Katie Klusman posted her first kill of the set, ending Green Bay's 3-0 run. Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the beginning of the match with powerful kills pushing the score to 10-7 with Green Bay in the lead. Wright State called the first timeout of the match at 12-7 after Green Bay went on a 2-0 run due to a Wright State hitting and service error. Coming out of the timeout Wright State was able to side out with a kill from Klusman. Both teams picked up big digs keeping the ball in play and trading points back-and-forth throughout the middle of the set, but Green Bay was able to keep their five point lead and push the score to 20-15 before the Raiders called their second timeout. Coming out of the timeout Green Bay went on a 3-0 run extending their lead to 23-16, but the Raiders rallied and went on a 2-0 run to close in on Green Bay at 23-18, forcing Green Bay to take their first timeout of the set. Green Bay was able to hold their lead coming out of the timeout and won the first set 25-20. Klusman and senior middle blocker
Megan Hopkins led the offensive attack for the Raiders with four kills each. Hopkins had an outstanding first set with a .667 hitting percentage. Wright State finished the first set with 14 kills while Green Bay posted 17 kills.
Second Set Highlights
The Raiders started off the second set with a big kill on the right side from freshman hitter
Celia Powers, and quickly went on to take the lead at 3-1. The teams kept the score close throughout the beginning of the set, tying the game three separate times at 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5 before Green Bay went on a 3-0 run taking the lead at 8-5. Wright State called its first timeout of the second set with Green Bay in the lead at 11-6 after a service ace from Green Bay. Coming out of the timeout freshman
Teddie Sauer recorded a powerful kill from the right side to side out for the Raiders. The momentum stayed with the Raiders as sophomore
Hannah Colvin immediately recorded back-to-back service aces, and a huge right side block from Sauer and Powers pulled the Raiders within one point at 11-10 forcing Green Bay to take a timeout. Klusman slammed down a kill on the outside coming out of the timeout and tied the game at 12-12. The teams tied the game two more times at 14-14 and 15-15 before Green Bay went on a 2-0 run taking the lead at 17-15 before Wright State called its second timeout. The Raiders came out of the timeout and quickly tied the game again at 17-17, and took the lead briefly at 18-17 after Hopkins slammed down a ball from the middle. The teams continued to keep the score close tying the game three more times before Green Bay went on a 4-0 run putting them within set point. Wright State was able to side out at 24-21, but a kill from Green Bay's setter ended the second set with Green Bay winning the set at 25-21. The Raiders had 10 total kills with Powers leading the team with three kills.
Third Set Highlights.
The Raiders took the lead early in the set at 5-1 after going on a 5-0 run and forcing Green Bay to take their first timeout of the set early in game. Coming out of the timeout Wright State continued their run and overpowered Green Bay at the net scoring three more points before Green Bay called their second timeout at 8-1. Green Bay was able to side out at 8-2 and battled back pulling within two points of the Raiders at 13-11 before Wright State called their first timeout to try and slow down Green Bay's comeback. Coming out of the timeout Klusman posted a big kill from the outside making the score 14-11. Soon after, two timely service aces by senior
Rachel Kremer helped the Raiders extend their lead to 17-12. The Raiders kept putting down big kills at the net and were able to push the score to 24-16 and won the third set with a service ace from sophomore
Hannah Colvin. The Raiders had nine kills in the third set, and were able to hold Green Bay to only eight kills for a .028 hitting percentage. Klusman and Barcus led Wright State with three kills each.
Fourth Set Highlights
Wright State scored the first point of the fourth set with a huge kill from Klusman on the outside. Both teams kept the score extremely close throughout the beginning of the set tying the game eight times and pushing the score to 8-8 before Wright State was able to go on a 2-0 run taking the lead at 10-8. Green Bay was able to tie the game back up at 11-11, but Wright State answered back immediately with a kill from Powers. Green Bay called their first timeout of the set at 15-12 after Wright State went on a 3-0 run. Coming out of the timeout the Raiders were able to quickly extend their lead to 18-14 with two of the three points coming from kills from Hopkins. With the score at 18-14 Green Bay called their second timeout to try and swing the momentum their way. The Raiders came out of the timeout with the momentum still on their side and put up a huge triple block in the middle extending their lead to 20-15. Green Bay was able to fight back and went on a 3-0 run pulling within two points at 20-18 before the Raiders sided out. The teams both continued to battle at the end of the set pushing the score to 22-20 before Klusman slammed down a kill on the outside putting the Raiders just two points away from winning the set. A final kill from Hopkins ended the set at 25-21 and forced a fifth set. Klusman led Wright State with five kills in the set. Wright State posted 13 kills while Green Bay posted 11 kills.
Fifth Set Highlights
Green Bay started off the fifth set with the first kill in the game taking the lead at 1-0, but Wright State immediately answered back going on a 3-0 run taking the lead at 3-1. Both teams continued to trade points back-and-forth pushing the score to 6-4 before Green Bay called their first timeout of the set. Coming out of the timeout Wright State posted two kills before switching sides at 8-4. The Raiders kept the momentum on their side pushing the score to 10-5 by picking up big digs and keeping the pressure on Green Bay at the net. The Raiders were able to continue extending their lead to 13-8 before Green Bay sided out with a kill from the right side. Wright State called its first timeout of the set at 13-10 after a 2-0 run by Green Bay brought them within three points. Coming out of the timeout Green Bay was able to post a kill, but the Raiders answered right back making it set point for the Raiders. A huge kill from Hopkins in the middle ended the set and the Raiders won 15-11 winning the match 3-2. Klusman led the Raiders in the match with 16 kills while Hopkins was close behind with 13 kills for a solid .370 hitting percentage.Â
