Volleyball Defeats Milwaukee Panthers 3-1

The Wright State volleyball team defeated the Milwaukee Panthers 3-1 Friday evening (25-19, 19-25 25-15, and 25-23) at WSU's McLin Gym.

First Set Highlights

Wright State took the early lead in set one at 4-1, but Milwaukee was able to tie the game quickly at 7-7.  Both teams kept the score close throughout the middle of the match tying the game multiple times at 8-8, 9-9, and 10-10 before the Raiders took the lead again at 13-10 after a 3-0 run.  Milwaukee called their first timeout of the set with Wright State in the lead at 13-10 in hopes of slowing down Wright State's run.  Coming out of the timeout both teams traded points back-and-forth pushing the score to 20-15 with the Raiders still in the lead.  The Panthers fought to try and tie the game, but the Raiders were able to overpower Milwaukee at the net and won the set 25-19.  A trio of freshman hitters, Abby Barcus, Teddie Sauer, and Celia Powers led the Raiders with three kills each of Wright State's 12 total kills.  Sauer and Barcus both recorded an outstanding .429 hitting percentage.

Second Set Highlights

Wright State took another early lead in set two at 4-0 with three powerful kills from senior middle hitter Megan Hopkins and a service ace from senior defensive specialist Rachel Kremer.  The Panthers went on their own 3-0 run to tie the game at 5-5, but Wright State was able to side out with a kill from Barcus and regain the lead at 6-5.  Milwaukee tied the game again at 6-6 with a kill and quickly took their first lead of the game at 10-7.  A media timeout was called with Milwaukee still in the lead by three points at 15-12.  Coming out of the timeout both teams traded points pushing the score to 18-14 before Wright State called their first timeout of the set.  Coming out of the timeout Wright State's Sauer put down a powerful kill on the right side to side out for the Raiders.  Milwaukee called their first timeout of the set at 18-16 after a 2-0 run by Wright State.  Coming out of the timeout the Panthers put down a kill on the outside extending their lead by three points to 19-16.  Wright State called their second and final timeout at 21-17 after a 2-0 run by the Panthers.  Coming out of the timeout Hopkins put down a big kill to side out for the Raiders.  Both teams continued to trade points putting down powerful kills and making athletic digs pushing the score to 23-19 before Milwaukee called their second and final timeout of the set.  Coming out of the timeout Milwaukee went on a 2-0 run to win the second set at 25-19.  Hopkins led the Raiders in the second set with five kills of Wright State's 12 overall kills.

Third Set Highlights

Wright State took another early lead in set three at 5-0 before Milwaukee called their first timeout hoping to slow down Wright State's run.  Coming out of the timeout the Raiders continued their run with a powerful kill from Hopkins in the middle.  Milwaukee called their second and final timeout of the set after the Raiders extended their lead to 8-0.  Coming out of the timeout senior libero Jessie Thornton recorded a service ace, extending Wright State's big lead.  Milwaukee was finally able to side out at 11-1 after a service ace by Wright State.  Both teams traded points back-and-forth in the middle of the set pushing the score to 18-8.  Milwaukee went on a 3-0 run late in the game capitalizing on Wright State errors to pull within seven points of the Raiders at 21-14.  Wright State took their first timeout of the set at 21-14 to slow down the Panther's run.  Coming out of the timeout the Raiders pulled within two points of set point with a service ace from senior setter Maddie Lohmeier.  The Panthers were able to put down one more kill in the third set, but the lead was too great and the Raiders quickly won the game at 25-15 after a 2-0 run.  Powers led the Raiders in the third set with three kills of Wright State's eight overall kills.
 
Fourth Set Highlights

Milwaukee took an early lead in set four at 2-0 before Wright State was able to side out after a service error by the Panthers.  Wright State quickly tied the game at 3-3 after back-to-back kills, but Milwaukee went on a 3-0 run to regain the lead at 6-3.  The Raiders were able to catch up to the Panthers in the middle of the set tying the game twice at 9-9 and 10-10 before Milwaukee pulled ahead at 13-11.  The Raiders quickly tied the game again at 14-14 after a 3-0 run, and pulled ahead at 15-14 with a huge block.  A media timeout was called at 15-14.  Coming out of the timeout Milwaukee tied the game at 15-15, but the Raiders were able to side out and regain the lead at 16-15.  Milwaukee called their first timeout of the set with Wright State in the lead at 18-16.  Coming out of the timeout both teams traded points back-and-forth pushing the score to 20-18.  Milwaukee tied the game at 20-20 and again at 21-21 before Wright State called their first timeout of the set.  Coming out of the timeout Hopkins slammed down a kill from the middle to give the Raiders the lead at 22-21.  The Panthers were able to tie the game at 22-22 and quickly took the lead at 23-22 before Wright State called their second and final timeout of the set.  Coming out of the timeout the Raiders quickly tied the game at 23-23 and put up a big block against the Panthers to take the lead at 24-21 for set point.  Wright State's Barcus slammed down the final kill of the set to win the match 25-23.  Hopkins led the Raiders in the fourth set with four kills of Wright State's overall 12 kills.
