The
Jeff Mercer era of Wright State baseball opened on a high note as the Raiders rallied with four runs in the final three innings to win at #10 Clemson 6-4 Friday afternoon.
Clemson took a 2-0 lead with a run in both the second and third, but WSU tied the game in the fifth on a two-run double to left center by
JD Orr, plating
Zach Weatherford and
Matt Morrow.
The Tigers went back in front 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth and it stayed that way until Wright State went in front to stay with three runs in the seventh. Orr drove in Weatherford with the first run on a hit to right and after
Gabe Snyder doubled in Orr, Snyder later scored on a passed ball.
Clemson cut the deficit to 5-4 with a run in its half of the seventh, only to see Weatherford provided an insurance run in the ninth with a solo home run to left.
Jason Foster earned the win for WSU, striking out one in 0.2 innings of work.
Ryan Weiss earned the save by shutting out the Tigers over the final 2.1 innings, allowing no hits while fanning two.
Orr finished with three hits and three RBI to pace the Raider offense while Morrow, Weatherford and
Alex Alders each had two hits.
"It's a great first win, but it won't define our season," said Mercer. "We have a lot of work to do to improve and I look forward to getting back on the field tomorrow to get better."
Wright State (1-0) and Clemson (0-1) continue the weekend series with a 2:00 single game on Saturday.
