Softball Defeats Oakland in Series Opener

The Wright State softball team extended its Horizon League winning streak to seven Friday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over Oakland in the opener of a three-game series at the WSU Softball Field.

The Raiders took the early lead with a run in the first.  With two out, Honnah Susor singled up the middle, stole second and scored as Vivi Marquez doubled off the fence in right center.

The Golden Grizzlies tied it in the fourth and it stayed that way until WSU went in front for good with two in the fifth.  Macy Cook led off with an infield hit and pinch-runner Karalyn Rhodeback advanced to third on a Kelly Dillow bunt and a Becka Peterson fly out.  After pinch-hitter Jordan Kennaw walked and Kate Pfeffer stole second, Libby Pfeffer knocked in both with a single to left.

WSU added an insurance run in the sixth on a Cook sacrifice fly, which turned out to be key as Oakland scored a run in the seventh and had a runner on third as the game ended.

Ashley Sharp (10-9) improved to 7-0 in league play by scattering nine hits in a complete-game effort, striking out four.  At the plate, Marquez finished with two hits.

Wright State (13-20, 8-2 Horizon) and Oakland (15-15, 8-5 Horizon) close out the series with a 1:00 doubleheader on Saturday.
