Softball Wins Series Opener Against League-Leading UIC

The Wright State softball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings and made that stand up for a 4-2 Horizon League win over league-leading UIC Friday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.

The Raiders scored a run in the first as Honnah Susor reached on an error, stole second and scored as Vivi Marquez chopped a single through the left side of the infield.

WSU extended the lead to 3-0 with two runs an inning later.  Singles by Kelly Dillow and Kate Pfeffer set the stage for Susor, who tripled off the fence in right center and nearly had an inside the park home run before being thrown out at the plate.

Wright State tacked on another run in the third as Macey Gunther singled to right center, went to third on a stolen base and a throwing error and scored on another RBI single from Marquez.

The Flames tallied single runs in the sixth and seventh, but Ashley Sharp held on for her first save of the year by stranding two runners to end the game.  Starter Ally Russell (4-6) threw four shutout innings to earn the win, allowing just one hit.

At the plate, Gunther and Marquez each had two hits while Susor and Marquez both drove in two.

WSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game with a pair of unearned runs in the second, but the game was halted due to lightning in the top of the third and was later suspended due to rain.

Wright State (16-25, 10-6 Horizon) and UIC (31-19, 16-3 Horizon) will resume the suspended game Saturday at 3:00, with the regularly scheduled game to follow.  Six Raider seniors will be honored before the resumption of the suspended game.
