Tied after seven innings, UIC scored three times in the final two frames to defeat the Wright State baseball team 5-2 to clinch the Horizon League regular-season title in the final game for both squads Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Raiders took the early lead with a run in the second. With one out, Kevin Whatley was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Brandon Giltrow grounder. JD Orr then drove in Whatley with a single through the left side of the infield.
UIC tied it with a run in the fourth, only to see WSU go back in front with a run in the fifth. Matt Morrow doubled down the left field line and went to third on Gabe Snyder's hit to right. Seth Gray then lined a double just over the third baseman's head to knock in Morrow.
The Flames, however, answered right back with a run in the sixth and went in front to stay with a run in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Zach Weatherford and Snyder each had two hits for Wright State (36-19, 21-9 Horizon), who will be the #2 seed for next week's Horizon League Tournament, which will take place at Granderson Stadium on the UIC campus. The Raiders will face the highest remaining seed after Wednesday's first-round games--either #3 Northern Kentucky, #4 Valparaiso or #5 Oakland--at 4:00 Eastern on Thursday, May 25.
