The 2016-17 award winners for each Wright State team and for the athletic department were announced on Friday.
For the second straight year, senior golfer Ryan Wenzler was the recipient of the Don Mohr Male Athlete of the Year Award while cross country/track senior Alexandra Brown was awarded the Peg Wynkoop Female Athlete of the Year Award. Junior swimmers Ryan Schultz and Jamie Krupp along with track senior Gabrielle Markley were recipients of the Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Awards, women's basketball coach
Katrina Merriweather and men's soccer coach
Bryan Davis each received the Terry Hall Coach of the Year Award and senior golfer Austin Sipe was awarded the Dr. Michael Cusack LifeSkills Award.
Wenzler (Centerville, OH/Centerville) was the Horizon League Co-Player of the Year as he posted a 71.73 round average, the best single-season round average in school history. The Horizon League Player of the Week on March 22, he placed third overall at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in the spring and tied for third at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in the fall. Wenzler also had five other top 10 finishes over nine tournaments, including tying for first at the Horizon League Championship.
Wenzler is the first to receive the Don Mohr Male Athlete of the Year Award in consecutive years since basketball player Vitaly Potapenko (1994-95, 1995-96). He is now one of 11 to be honored as a WSU Athlete of the Year more than once, joining Bob Grote (basketball/baseball 1974-75, 1975-76), Jodi Martin (basketball 1979-80, 1981-82), Robin Conley (swimming 1982-83, 1983-84), Hylton Dayes (soccer 1983-84, 1985-86) Scott Troutwine (swimming 1984-85, 1986-87), Jon Sbrocco (baseball 1990-91, 1991-92), Amanda Dieter (swimming 1992-93, 1993-94), DaShaun Wood (basketball 2004-05, 2006-07), Cassandra Lloyd (track 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12) and Kim Demmings (basketball 2012-13, 2014-15, 2015-16).
Brown (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs) helped lead the cross country team to a second-place finish at the Horizon League Championships, the highest-ever place for the program in its history, as she finished 14th, earning Second Team All-League honors in the process. During the indoor track season, she set school records in the 1 mile run and in the 3000 meter run, while during the outdoor season, Brown set school records in the 1500, 3000, 5000 and 10000 meter runs along with a league record in the 10000 meter run
Schultz (DeKalb, IL/DeKalb), an Athletic Training major with a 3.83 grade point average, finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke at the Horizon League Championships. He posted the team's top time of the season in the 200 breaststroke, third-best in the 100 breaststroke and fourth-best in the 200 backstroke.
Krupp (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington), a Spanish major who holds a perfect 4.00 grade point average, recorded WSU's second-best time of the season in the 100 breaststroke, third-best in the 1650 freestyle, fourth-best in the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley and fifth-best in the 500 and 1000 freestyle along with the 200 individual medley.
Markley (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek), a Sports Science major who also holds a perfect 4.00 grade point average, finished fourth in the pentathlon at the Horizon League Indoor Track Championships and third in the heptathlon at the Horizon League Outdoor Track Championships. She also posted the team's best mark of the indoor season in the high jump, second-best in the long jump, fourth-best in the 300 meter dash and fifth-best in the 200 meter dash. In the outdoor season, Markley recorded the team's top marks in the shot put and javelin throw, second-best in the 100 meter hurdles, high jump and long jump, fourth-best in the 200 meter dash and fifth-best in the 800 meter run.
Davis earned Horizon League Coach of the Year honors as he directed the men's soccer team to its first-ever Horizon League regular season title in 2016 as the Raiders finished 11-6-3 overall and 7-1-1 in the league. The seven league wins being the most in program history and WSU also advanced to the finals of the league tournament for the third consecutive year.
Merriweather was selected as the Horizon League Coach of the Year as she led the women's basketball team to a 25-9 overall record. The Raiders tied for the Horizon League title for the first-time ever with a 15-3 mark and made their third straight appearance in the Women's National Invitation Tournament, defeating Central Michigan before falling to eventual champion Michigan.
Sipe (Centerville, OH/Centerville) was named Second Team All-Horizon League as he shot a season-best 68 at Marshall and at the Cleveland State Invitational while his highest finishes came at the Crusader Collegiate and the Wright State Invitational with 11th place finishes.
Voting for the Athlete of the Year Awards is conducted by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee while the Coach of the Year Award is decided by a vote of Wright State's head coaches.
