Raiders Pull Away for Win over YSU

Wright State Wins 77-67 to go 6-0

The Wright State men's basketball team stumbled but came back strong to take down Youngstown State 77-67 and remain undefeated in the Horizon League at 6-0.  Five Raiders scored in double figure, led by freshmen Loudon Love and Jaylon Hall with 16 points each.  Cole Gentry added 14 points as Mark Hughes and Grant Benzinger each had 13 points.

Wright State is now 14-5 overall and have won seven straight games.

GAME SUMMARY

First Half Highlights
  • The Raiders went to the locker room at halftime down 38-35 to the Penguins.
  • Newcomers Gentry and Hall were both 3-3 on 3-pointers and led the way with 11 points each.
  • Benzinger, named HL Player of the Week earlier in the day, had six points and a team-high four rebounds along with two blocks and a steal.
  • YSU capitalized on Raider blunders, scoring 11 points off of three turnovers. 
  • Wright State had seven threes in the first 20 minutes, shooting 54% from 3-point range. .
  • The Raiders shot 48% from the field.
Second Half Highlights
  • The Raiders started the second half in the hole for the first time in league play but erased the deficit within two minutes on back-to-back threes from Gentry and Hughes.
  • The score bounced back and forth until Wright State took the lead for good on a pair of Benzinger free throws at 7:49.
  • Wright State increased its lead to 10 points at 3:20.
  • YSU turned the ball over 13 times in the second half, compared to just four for the Raiders.
  • Benzinger led the Raiders with eight rebounds as Love grabbed seven.
  • Gentry finished with six assists and didn't turn the ball over.  Hughes added four assists with three steals.
  • YSU leading scorer and pre-season all-conference pick Cameron Morse was held to just two points as Braun Hartfield led all scorers with 26 points.
  • WSU shot 44% from the field and were outrebounded 41-32.
FACTS AND FIGURES
  • Both team benches had 17 points and both teams had 17 points off turnovers.
  • YSU led 32-26 for points in the paint.
