The 16th ranked Wright State men's soccer team will head out for its final two road matches of the regular season this week, when it squares off against Marshall on Tuesday, and Green Bay on Saturday. The Raiders battled the elements on Saturday night at home to earn a 1-0 victory over IUPUI, putting a firmer grasp on first place in the Horizon League.
Rankings Recap
After an excellent start to the season, with the only blemish on the record coming against #6 Virginia on October 2, the Raiders have found themselves nationally ranked in both the United Soccer Coaches Poll, and the Top Drawer Soccer National Poll for the majority of the season. After Saturday's victory over IUPUI, the Raiders moved up one spot in the United Soccer Coaches Poll to number 16, after holding the number 17 spot a week ago.
Raider Round-Up
The Raiders (11-1-2, 5-0-1 Horizon League, 1st Place) return to the road this week with a chance to clinch the regular season Horizon League title, but head coach Jake Slemker says his team needs to focus on one day at a time. "We're not looking ahead that far," commented Slemker. "We've gotten to where we are by taking it one step at a time, and that is what we will continue to do." In his first year in charge of the Raiders men's soccer program, Slemker has his team poised to post its best win percentage in program history. The team's focus continues to be on a day-by-day approach, as a two-match road trip, their final of the regular season, looms this week. Winners of their last three matches, the Raiders have bumped their goals per match average to an impressive 2.50, while surrendering just 1.07 per match on average. The defense, led by last year's Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year senior Dan Bent, has done a tremendous job forcing opponents to shoot from outside the dangerous areas on the field, leading to a measly 38% of opposing shots being on goal. On the offensive side, Alec Philippe's 11 goals leads the Raiders, and lands him second in the Horizon League among all scorers. Jackson Dietrich continues to be the set-up man for Philippe and all of the Raiders, with his 11 assists tying him for the Horizon League lead. Joel Sundell has his goals against average below one at 0.95, with a .759 save percentage.
Scouting Marshall
The Thundering Herd (5-7-2, 1-3-1 Conference USA, 7th Place) will enter Tuesday's match with a 2-3 record in the month of October, following a 1-0 loss to Charlotte at home on Saturday. Marshall averages 1.36 goals per match this season, with just 19 goals scored in its first 14 matches. On the defensive end, they have only allowed 18 goals in those 14 matches, which has led to almost every game being incredibly close for the Thundering Herd. Gianni Bouzoukis leads the Thundering Herd in goals with four on the season, while Jonas Westmeyer has tallied three assists on the year. Paulo Pita holds the majority of time played in net for Marshall, holding a .754 save percentage and a 1.28 goals against average.
Scouting Green Bay
With six days of rest, the Phoenix (7-4-2, 3-2-1 Horizon League, 3rd place) will certainly be well rested, and will be looking to make a climb up the Horizon League standings, currently sitting three points behind UIC for second place. The Phoenix hosted UIC on Saturday, beating them by a final score of 2-0. Similar to Tuesday's opponent, the Raiders will be facing a strong defensive team at Green Bay. The Phoenix have allowed just 12 goals in 13 matches, while scoring 17 themselves. Tomer Zloczower has five goals for the Phoenix, as well as 26 shots and four game-winning goals. In net, Nikola Kahvedzic has the majority of starts (9) and has only allowed seven goals, posting a .800 save percentage.
