SMU Edges @WSU_MBB

Raiders Fall 77-76

The Wright State men's basketball team played much better but could not turn it into a win as SMU defeated the Raiders 77-76 in the final game of the Cancun Challenge in Mexico Wednesday night.

Loudon Love was strong again with his third double-double of the season as he ended with 19 points, 14 rebounds, two assists and a block while being named to the all-tournament team.  Four other Raiders ended in double-figure scoring as Mark Hughes and Cole Gentry each had four three pointers for 14 total points.  Parker Ernsthausen, who did not score Tuesday night, came up with 12 points versus SMU, and Alan Vest came off the bench for his career-best 11 points.  All of Vest's points were in the first half.  WSU hit 14 three pointers and shot 52% behind the arc as they shot 50% overall.  SMU outrebounded the Raiders 26-25.

First Half
The Raiders came out strong, taking control of the game with leads of 8-4, 17-9 and 23-13 at nine minutes to go until the Mustangs went 10-0 to tie the score at 23.  The teams exchanged the lead as WSU took off with a 39-33 advantage as Hughes hit a three at the buzzer.  Vest collected his career-high 11 points in the first half with three three pointers as Love ended with nine points and five rebounds.  Hughes and Gentry each had six points.  Both teams shot just better than 50% from the field, but the Raiders hit eight threes to just three for SMU.  The Mustangs did win the boards 12-8, but WSU moved the ball with 12 assists to just one for SMU.

Second Half
SMU came back and outscored WSU 11-4 to tie the game at 44 with 16 minutes remaining.  WSU went up 59-54 on another three pointer then used a long three from Gentry to go up 62-54.  SMU answered with an 8-0 run for the tie as the teams exchanged baskets.  The Raiders led 67-66 at the final media timeout.  SMU won 77-76 as Gentry had a long shot attempt at the buzzer.  In the half, Love had 10 points; Hughes and Gentry finished with eight points.  WSU shot 55% from three and 50% overall in the final 20 minutes.

All-Tournament Team
Loudon Love was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Also named to the team were
Jahmal McMurray (SMU), Lamar Stevens and Josh Reaves of Penn State, Darrel Brown and Elijah Childs (MVP) of Bradley.

Nagy Says
"Our offense is not the problem but our defense needs more work, and it needs to be better.  They shot 55% against us, and the answer is we are not very good defensively.  Alan Vest played well, and he has done what we asked him to do."
